Blog 1, Chapter 1, August 29-Sept. 4

Hello Students,

It was great meeting you on the blog last week and learning about your educational journeys.  We have a great variety of students in the class and many different educational backgrounds.  This diversity makes for interesting discussion and sharing of ideas.  For this week, share your ideas on motivation.

Please read Chapter 1 in CollegeScope before commenting on any of these questions.  You can also write or ask questions about anything related to college and career success or comment on others students' postings.  Remember to make 2 postings of 100 words minimum for each posting to get the full 16 points for the blog this week.  Postings for this week are due before 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 4.
 1.  How do you motivate yourself to be successful?
2.  Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful?
3.  If you are thinking about dropping this class or dropping out of college, how can you motivate yourself to continue?
4.  What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them?

After reading the first chapter in collegescope I have come to realize that there are many different ways to study for things and there are many ways to keep oneself focus and not distracted. there are plenty of ways to stay focused on school work and plenty of ways to help get rid of a habit. Bad study habits are nee=ver beneficial to your work in any way. Studying is the best way to learn something. repetition really helps and I am a visual learner, so being able to see something done a certain way then recreating it becomes easier. In a school environment there are many distractions and reasons people make up to not pay attention or to slack off. Yet, this is college.. this is where people go to enrich their knowledge in the subjects that interest them. This is the place where one will figure out where they will go in life and with out studying and actually trying on their own then I truly believe they will not succeed. believing in yourself is great.. but studying and knowing you will ace that test is even better.

    1. i motivate myself by thinking of the progress i am making by continuing what i am doing or studying for. just reminding myself that i am one step closer to where i need to be.
    2. I think the spider technique is very helpful in trying to avoid being distracted by things or people. i have never heard of that before and i think it will be useful to me.
    3. motivating yourself should not be a hard thing to do. being in school is what we are lucky to do. having an education is something a good percentage of the world cant acuire and by being unmotivated is showing that you dont care about that fact at all. that in itself should be the motivation to us all. being able to go to school and being able to own books. its something others will never get the chance to do or have. therefore being a student is a large accomplishment in itself. why wouldn't one take advantage of every useful thing they can use to move forward in their educational journey.
    4. some road blocks would probably be lack of time i hve in my schedule. i am really busy almost 80% of the year. i like to stay busy but thats a bit much. i need to prioritize what needs to be in my life and what doesnt need to be that way i can have a clear vision of what i need to do and what i need to lose.

1.) i motivated myself by thinkin about my parents. My parents always told me that i should be able to be better than them since i will have more knowledge than them
2.)i will try the spider techinque. i will start going to a quiet place where there are no distractions.
3.)my notivation to not drop out of college is the money. thats the main reason most people go to college.
4.) some of my obstacle of being succesfull is procasinating. if i stop doing that i will be more likely to be more successfull.

  4. There are many different ways I can find to motivate myself. I have always wanted to earn my bachelor’s degree and knowing that if I continue to work hard and stay focused I can earn my degree helps to motivate me. It’s also motivating when I work hard and earn a good score or grade in my classes. It shows me that I can do well if I just apply myself. If I focus on the big picture; meaning my future, a good career and my children then it helps me to stay motivated to do well and finish my classes.

I have a couple different roadblocks; well I try not to think of them as roadblocks. I like to think of them more as speed bumps. These problems are not impossible to overcome; they are just a bit hard to work around. First, I have 2 children and of course children need a lot of time and attention. I do not want to take away from my time with my daughters for my schooling. However, at the same time I want to finish my schooling so that I can provide a better life for my children and set a good example for them. Second, I need to provide for my family now and going to school does not bring in much money. Again, I realize that with the schooling I will be able to provide for my family better than I am able to now. So, for now here are the ways I can deal with my problems. I have arranged my schedule so that I can go to school the same hours as my children then I can be home with them at night. We can work on homework at the same time, and for the homework that I’m unable to finish I try to get that done either on campus in between classes or at night after they have gone to bed. I know there will be times that that doesn’t work out perfectly, but I can deal with that as it comes up. Also, as for money, I have to learn to budget our income more closely and cut out on activities and entertainment that aren’t completely necessary. I can just keep reminding myself that the next couple years are just a short period of time that we have to live this way, and then things won’t be as hard as they are right now.

My children her my biggest motivator when it comes to accomplishing my goals. I want me children to see that if you set your mind to it you can accomplish anything. Being a goal model to my children has to be one of my biggest motivators. I also feel staying focused on the objective is a big motivator. I really want to have my masters degree before my children graduate high school and hopefully before they go off to college. Another thing that motivates me is thinking about my grandmother who earned her degree when she was 71 years old.

  7. 1. I motivate myself my thinking about my family. I want to obtain my degree to continue to improve mine and my family's future.
    2. "Be here now" is a technique that I am going to try as I sometimes have a hard time concentrating when I have a lot going on with my family, work, etc.
    3. If I were thinking about dropping out of school I would think to determine what was making me think about drop out of school. I would try to come up with a resolution to change my mind about dropping out because of my family.
    4. I have three roadblocks to my success. I want to spend time with my children when they are out of school, so I am unable to take classes at school in the evenings. My husband deploys often, so I have more responsibility on my shoulders when he is deployed. I work full-time, so I can't take classes in the morning. I have decided to take as many of my courses online and take less classes when my husband is deployed to keep my stress down.

I really enjoy the chapter Understanding motivation on Collegescope. As a returning College student going for my second Degree this chapter remind me of techniques that are very useful and can really help us to succeed in College. Be dedicated will make everything a lot easier. We should all see College as tool for knowledge that will make us grow as a person and help us to find out where can we go in life. And when when that idea seems foggy we need to find ways to stay motivated so we can achieve what we are looking for.
    1. Personally as a motivation technique I keep in mind that learning is always a good thing. I visualize the College experience as enjoyable and I look forward for meeting other people. Also the fact that I am expanding my options and in the future I could have a satisfying career and earn more money motivate myself.

  11. 2.The idea that I found most interesting in Chapter 1 is the one about our "worry time". I think that worry is a very human thing that we all do, and I agree with the fact that worrying interfere with our concentration when trying to study so if you actually set up a time for worrying that will help with concentrating on the task.
3.If the idea of dropping out of college crosses my mind I will remind my self of my motivations for being here, the experience, the people I have meet and will meet, the knowledge I am acquiring and what that will bring to my future.
    4. For me one of the road blocks would probably be sometimes thinking negatively and having the feeling that I am the victim of the circumstance once this is the first time I will experience College in another language. When that happens I try to be positive and make the best of every situation. I will give myself credit for pushing my limits returning to College for a second degree in another language.

  12. I have found my motivation from many different places. I can relate to this chapter a lot. My motivation comes within me that is one thing I am sure of and I am highly motivated. Another place is from my family. I have a baby sister that I will be responsible for in the near near future. My parents are older and weren't expecting to be raising a baby now but they don't have a choice so not only am I doing school for myself and my future it is for the future of my family. Lastly my motivation comes from seeing me succeeding in the future. I can only dream of the future but I will get there soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1.In order to motivate myself to be successful I think about the future and how going to school is benefiting me and my family for the future. I tell myself only I can do it and that no one else can do what needs to be done for me. I am in charge of my life and decisions and I want to be a great example not only for my baby sister but for my sister in law, who is only 19.
    2. I think the spider technique is pretty cool and I think I want to try that because I can be distracted very easily. Its easy for me to lose my focus and concentration so I need to tell myself to just stay focused. The more effort and concentration I put into my assignments or whatever it may be, I can get done with it faster and do an excellent job at the same time.
3.I am not planning to drop this class nor am I planning to drop out of college. However if I was planning on it I would tell myself that it is just not going to happen. I finish what I start and if I need a class I will stick with it no matter what.
    4. Some of my roadblocks to my success would be finances, and time taken away from my family. With finances I just find ways to work thru not having enough money. I don't have a job right now but luckily I have an amazing supportive family who is there for me and a great guy who is supporting me and my goals. They know that if I can't do it now then it will just take more and more time. Spending time with my family is extremely important to me. Since I started school it has been difficult to designate time for them with so much homework. But we all came to an agreement then I will have homework designated time and family designated time. My baby sister just turned six years old this past August and is starting first grade so I need to be there now more than ever while she is growing up. I help her with her homework every night and still read books to her and I won't allow that to change. I believe there will always be roadblocks or potholes in the road ahead but I just have to keep pushing forward. I won't allow myself to get stuck.

  14. My father is my biggest motivator. He came to this country not knowing much English. Eventually he started going to school and now he is a successful pharmaceutical technician. He loves his job as he loves his family. So you can see how he is my motivator. I was born in this country so I have more than what he had. And if he can move away from his mother, father, and siblings to start a life of his own in a totally different country, I can too. Motivation comes from seeing what is wanted from the person experiencing it. And what I want is too be successful like my father.

  15. 1. I motivate my self by simply thinking how I got my self in the situation I am currently at. I got there through hard work, so why quite now.

    2. The most interesting thing about chapter 1 and one that I could relate too is the spider technique. I practice this technique almost all the time. And I loved how it was related to a spider ignoring noise.

    3. Think about everyone else who passed this course and even college to see where they got in life. Most people I know who graduated college are successful and have very good lives.

    4. Roadblocks to my success can be many things, one being stress. Stress is a relative thing, and if I come across it, I will just teach my self to cope with and overcome it.

  16. 1. How do you motivate yourself to be successful?
    2. Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful?

I motivate myself to be successful by telling myself that I can reach my goals in life and I stick to them. I always do my work because I know that is what I need to do to move forward with my life. I also make sure that I have my goals in mind before I move forward so I know what I need to do to keep success in mind. I do rely on the motivation of my family to get me through some hard stuff but mostly it is just myself.I try and stay organized and make sure I complete the courses required for my major with a good grade and I do all of my work on time. There were some new ideas about intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that I did find interesting. I did not know the difference at first but then I found them out and realized both helped in their own ways. Extrinsic motivators are outside sources of motivation from other and I wish I had more of those because they are a lot more helpful. When someone else is telling me I can get through school too it really shows me that others believe in me as well. I find that extrinsic motivators really help boost my self confidence and help my intrinsic motivators to be greater. I thought that having more extrinsic motivators in my life would be helpful after reading this. I found that I don’t have enough extrinsic motivation from my family and I hope that is something that will change.

  17. 3. If you are thinking about dropping this class or dropping out of college, how can you motivate yourself to continue?
    4. What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them?

If I was thinking about dropping out of college or this class I would motivate myself to continue by thinking about all of the positive outcomes of staying in college. I would think about all the people who are depending on me and I would just reconsider dropping out because I don’t want to become a failure. I would think about what all my options are and just see that education is the only way I can truly achieve my goals in life. I know I don’t want to end up not getting where I want to be in life so that really helps me strive to be the best person I can be. I would try and think towards the future so I can stay on track in my life. Some roadblocks to success would be not having enough money to get myself through school to be successful. Some others would be not having the support I need to keep my self going towards finding success. I can overcome them by just believing in myself and find ways to stay in school. Even if I had to work my way through school I would do it because that is what is necessary to reach success.

    1. How do you motivate yourself to be successful? I motivate myself to be successful in several different ways. First of all I think of how proud my family will be if I am successful. I know how important it is for me to finish college. I want to be the first person in my family to do that. The thought of completing school and making them proud is motivation to continue. Another motivation for me to try and be successful is thinking about how great my life can be if I get a college education. I don’t want to have to struggle financially for the rest of my life. Getting a college degree is the best thing I can do for myself to insure I will have a better life. I am trying to be a nurse, and I know if I don’t give up and just continue my schooling I can do it.

    2. Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful? I really liked the idea of taking breaks when studying or doing homework. I never take breaks and I always lose focus because I work for long periods of time a lot. I recently started taking small breaks while I do my homework and it helped. I feel less stressed when I take a break and then get back to work.

    3. If you are thinking about dropping this class or dropping out of college, how can you motivate yourself to continue? If I ever thought about dropping out of college I would tell myself to not give up and think of my future. I have goals set and sometimes I forget my goals, anytime I think about quitting I think of my goals. My goals motivate me to want to continue with my college education I also think of my family and how disappointed they’d be if I just gave up on school. I think of how proud they will be when I finish school, and that motivates me to keep going.

    4. What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them? Some roadblocks to my success are money, and time. I do struggle with having enough money to pay for school each semester. I can overcome this road block by trying to get help paying for school from family or financial aid. Time is another road block for me because I never have time to finish my homework. I can overcome this by continuing to devote at least two hours a day to studying and homework.

  19. Hello class, I wanted to bring up that most of our motivations for success is our families. I have three younger and I want to set a good example for them. I know if they see their big sister do well in college, they might want to do the same. I think each one of us would love to make our families proud and being a college graduate will make them proud. I know I can succeed in college and become successful if I just stick to it.

  20. What I have to do to motivate myself to stay on the right track to success would to remember to take the time out of my day at least five days out of the week to sit down and really focus on my school work. Remember that all my problems can wait for later. I think the main thing that I grasped out of Chapter 1 about Motivation is to just take it one step at a time and to be persistent. I need to remember that my inspiration should come from within so that it can be more meaningful to my life instead of just rushing through the work.

  21. Well so fare my classes have not been too stressful, being on time to get books and stuff have probably been the hardest part. I haven't decided to drop out of any of my classes because I know they are all going to be meaningful to my life. Knowledge most of the time is my motivation and knowing that I am going to achieve my goals to have the life/job that I desire. As of right now I would say that my roadblocks along the way to achieving my success would be my lack of concentration when I am in a loud environment. Such as my home with my 10 month old distraction, also known as my child ha ha. I need to set myself in a environment where I can study on my internal motivation and not be distracted by everything going on around me. I think this class could be on the balcony upstairs in the front of my house while my baby daddy and son are downstairs playing in the sitting room and watching television.

  22. How do you motivate yourself to be successful?

I motivate myself to become successful not just in school but in anything I put my mind to. One of the most important ways I motivate myself is by remembering my daughter and her future. Before I just lived for myself and I was pretty motivated but now I have another person to think about and thus have a lot more ways to motivate myself. I use intrinsic motivation with school because I go because I want financial success in my near future. Overall I am motivated by the rewards that come with a degree. I look forward to buying my dream car and home and use all of those things as motivators.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 2. Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful?

Chapter 1 taught me so much on how to become motivated and some new techniques on how to concentrate on school. I am looking forward to trying the checkmark technique to document how many times my mind wanders while I’m in class. After I see how many checkmarks I have I plan to do something about it. I think it sounds like a good idea to remind myself to “be here now”, in a way I’m telling myself to pay attention. We have all been in a situation where other things or people are distracting us from homework or studying and the spider technique seems to be the best solution. I can be disciplined and set my mind to finish the tasks I put myself up to.

One way to become motivated that I found very useful is to use the rewards technique. I use it daily with a lot of things I do. I often remind myself that the sooner I finish whatever it is I’m doing the faster I will be able to do the things I want to and love to do. I also tell myself that if I do not do things right the first time around I will waste more time in the future doing them over again. This chapter opened my eyes to new techniques on becoming motivated.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1.) I motivate myself to be successful by envisioning the kind of lifestyle that a college degree could help me create, and by being competitive. Having a successful and prestigious career, as well as achieving financial security has always been one of my biggest motivations in working for a college degree. But I also find a lot of motivation by being competitive. My competitiveness makes me work harder and push myself further when it comes to earning grades and succeeding in classes.

2.) Something that really caught my attention in this chapter, was the idea of setting up a work space to be strictly used as a place to study. I always study on my bed with the TV on, or on the computer with music and facebook distracting me. The idea of setting up a desk that is designated only for studying seems like a really helpful suggestion for me. I think this would not only help me cut back my distractions, but also keep my schoolwork and supplies organized and clutter free.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 3.) I have never dropped out of a class, but at times I have found myself frustrated enough to consider it. The way I have always been able to motivate myself is by thinking about the pros and cons of dropping the class. There are always very few pros, and several cons. Pros such as: more time to focus on other classes and less stress. Cons such as: I would be disappointed in myself, my parents would be disappointed in me, I would probably have to take the class again anyway, I would be wasting money, and I would be missing out on the accomplished feeling of finishing a class and scratching it off of my requirements list.

4.) I’m not sure if it’s because I am a optimistic person or because my parents are financially helping me to attend college, but I haven’t had to many roadblocks in my educational journey. The biggest challenge for me has been making myself focus in classes that I don’t find interesting. I can overcome this problem, but recognizing when my mind is wandering and choosing to shift my attention and energy back to the task at hand.

  26. Many of the ideas for motivation in Chapter 1 are very interesting. One I had not heard of before was to “set up a worry time”. I tend to worry about many things during the day, like most people do. When this happens I usually end up with a headache and want to do nothing afterwards. Setting up a time to worry or think about the problems will prevent unneeded headaches and a time to find a solution for them as well. I also find rewarding yourself a great way to motivate oneself. It is very true that it does not have to cost you much or anything at all. Being able to have free time is motivation enough for me. Being able to continue reading a novel or going out for a walk is a great way to reward myself. I think these motivations will help me with my study and concentration issues. I hope that everyone finds the right one(s) as well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The biggest roadblock to my success is probably the most common one; time. I always intended to return to school and continue with my major or start on another, after getting an Associate Degree in Business years ago. I just didn't expect to take as many years as I have to do so. It was hard to return because most of my time was consumed with work and family. Working long hours every week and spending the rest of the time with my children and family; left little time for me to relax much less to attend school. Now that I am only working 3 days a week, I am able to return to school and do what I intended to do, continue my education. Even though some acquaintances have advised me to look for another job, I think it would be best for my future and my families, if I continue and complete my education. To do so I plan on overcoming my concentration issues by using the motivations mentioned on Chapter1. I will complete my goal as long as I concentrate study hard, do all my work and most importantly believe in myself, which I already do.

  28. 1.How do you motivate yourself to be successful?

I motivate myself to be successful is always to remind myself of all the hard road blocks that I have passed and that I can go until the end.

    2. Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful?

There are some new ideas on motivation that were mentioned in chapter 1 that I found interesting and helpful is the spider technique. I am the kind of person that I can get distracted very easily and by using the spider technique and remind myself to stay focus it will help me more to get my homework done on time and maybe earlier than its due date.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 3.If you are thinking about dropping this class or dropping out of college, how can you motivate yourself to continue?

I am not thinking of dropping from this class nor dropping from college; however, if that idea came to my mind, I would remind myself of all the great changes that will happen in my life when I finish college with a degree, the great life, increase my self-esteem, and most importantly is being proud of myself.

    4. What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them?

Some of the roadblocks to my success are being at this level of energy of being really excited to finishing up school; I am worried that sometime down the road I will lose this energy of finishing up. Even though i am not the person who is paying for my college, my parents are, I am also not sure of the financial outcomes that will show up later in life especially with economy being bad as it is now.

Q1 I motivate myself with positive reinforcement mostly. This motivation technique spans both short term and long term planned goals. For example, doing homework on a regularly basis can be constrained short term; every week I will complete all assignments. This works similarly long term. Positive reinforcement is what I implement personally.
Q2 There were one or two new ideas which I encountered during the transverse of the Chapter 1 in CollegeScope. In particular I found the “spider technique” and “be here now” methods to be especially interesting. However, I do not necessarily follow these, but a varied and combined method of listed studying techniques. For the most part, I was aware of the motivation ideas in this chapter.

  31. after reading chapter 1 understanding motivation it was interesting to me cause it wasn't like a everyday textbook it was as if you were with a counselor giving you advise about life. it was an amazing chapter to read i enjoy it and gave me a better understanding about different ways to be motivated and to the road of success. i motivate myself to be successful by going to college to get an education therefore i can have a career and be successful in life. The section that i found useful in chapter 1 was the locus in control because many blame other things rather than themselves for the responsibilities in life, we as an individual control our life so therefore we must take responsibilities for our actions and learn to fix our mistakes. we need to think positive not negative

Q3 Anyone taking this course currently, and is thinking about dropping this course and/or college altogether can return to their six listed values for continuing in collegiate education. Furthermore, one can propose a list of values and/or reasons to the purpose of pursuing a college education and achievement of one’s goals.
Q4 Personally, some main roadblocks and hindrances I face are the inability to exceptionally manage my time, and perhaps, not having a stiff set list of priorities. The second roadblock is directly related to the first, in that having a set unchanging list of priorities would be a good step towards time management.

  33. 1.) I motivate myself to be successful by comparing my status of life to others. It helps me to improve my goals based on realistic and logical judgments. By learning from others, I inspire myself to do well in knowing that people, such as my younger siblings will be looking up to me.
2.) I like the idea of the Spider technique. It sounds reasonable. Ill need to find a nice quiet place to study and just get through all my studying.

  34. if i was thinking about dropping out of college i would have to have a back-up plan to even consider dropping out i would have to motivate myself to the one thing i want to do in life is travel around the world therefore i have to save money and stay where i work but try to move up, but i wouldnt even consider dropping out of college and this class is amazing and very useful so i wouldnt think twice about dropping out of nowhere.i know i can balance school and work but if i want to travel i can do that to while still being in school i can study abroad.
my roadblocks in my success is making the effort to make time for studying ahead of time not procrastinating the night before the exam or doing assignments before its due. i need to overcome them by not making the same mistake and having time to do homework and study time. i want to finish college and be somebody and i need to stop taking breaks its game time now.

  35. This chapter has opened my eyes to the many techniques and tips that can help me be successful in college. I had never really thought of helpful ways to apply myself and keep myself focused before I read this chapter. Now, I know many strategies for studying and ensuring that I get the most out of my college experience. I have learned to adapt good habits and dispose of bad habits that will only hurt me in the long run. I have also learned new terms such as "intrinsic motivation" and "locus of attention" that help me get a better grasp on how motivated of a student I am. Like I said, this chapter has been eye opening and I feel that I can really benefit from this information.

  36. 1. I motivate myself to be successful by thinking of the benefits that I will get from it, both short term and long term. Taking a step back and thinking about why I am doing something and how it will help me motivates me to put my full effort into that certain task and to finish it with confidence.

    2. Learning about intrinsic motivation helped me realize what kind of student I am and what kind of student I want to be. I learned that I have intrinsic motivation in some areas, so I will most likely be succesful in those areas. I also learned that I dont have intrinsic motivation in other areas so I should try to improve myself in those areas to be more successful.

    3. If I am thinking about dropping out of a class or dropping out of college, I think of the long term benefits of staying in college and that motivates me to continue my studies. These benefits include getting a good job, making good money, and becoming a smarter, more interesting person.

    4. My biggest roadblock to success is procrastination. I can help myself from not procrastinating as much by giving myself adequate time to study and rewarding myself after I study to make a habit out of studying in time and doing better in school.

  37. 3. I am not thinking about dropping this class nor dropping out of college; Although, if a situation arose, which led to those circumstances, I would motivate myself to continue the course by coming to the realization that graduating with a degree gives me more opportunity to advance in life. Education is important in building a well thought out career in order to claim "bragging rights" in my future, rather than always regretting how successful I could have been in my time line.
    4. As a determined individual, I have little to none extreme roadblocks in my life because I am constantly working to improve myself for the better. One important obstacle that I am continuing to face is procrastinating and being unaware of time. Although I tend to leave my priorities until the last minute, I work better under pressure, which in turn allows me to focus more clearly on the tasks at hand that need to get done.

  38. My main roadblock that has held me from reaching some goals I set my self to complete is my excuse for lack of time. I can make time by better organizing what I do and when I do it and develop a positive pattern of how I use my time. I recently started exercising 4 days per week for about 45 minutes per workout. I have started to see positive results and that keep me motivated. I hope that I can use that experience to develop the habit to exercise daily in the near future and not give the excuse that I have no time. For my new educational goals, I need to develop the habit of setting a time aside for studying daily

  39. Several students have mentioned that their motivation comes from wanting to offer a better life for their families and or because they had a positive father/mother role model. I too have to admit that my strongest motivation when I completed my first educational goal was my mother. She learned a new language and she worked hard to provide for a family of five on her own with a minimum wage salary in a new country. She continues to be an inspiration for me and I want to continue my educational journey to be an inspiration to my family and others

  40. I have to say this has been an enlightening chapter. In my opinion this book offers people ways to flourish in not only school but in life as well and on top of that the book does it in such a constructive way that reading the chapter didn’t even feel like work. There were a number of strategies and tips one can apply in an effort to make their college experience successful/fulfilling. One thing in particular that stood out for me was the section about internal locus of control. This section just registered, having control over your own life. Putting a stop to thinking negatively and relying on someone else to make the class interesting or enjoyable.

  42. 1. The way I motivate myself is by thinking about the reasons why I’m here and reminding myself that each class I finish means I’m one step closer to the finish line.
    2. I mentioned this in a previous post the section regarding internal locus of control was something I found both interesting and helpful. The part about self-motivation, thinking positively, and relying on oneself to learn the material.
    3. First of all I have no intention of dropping this particular class. As for dropping out of college that’s out of the question. My grandparents are contributing financially to my college education and they expect me to get a college degree. I would consider that an extrinsic motivator.
    4. One roadblock I can think of is how I manage my time, I tend to be a procrastinator and that’s just added stress. Another roadblock or hurdle I find is when I’m taking a class because I have to and I have no interest in it whatsoever. That’s when I have to remind myself the reasons why I’m taking this class and what I’m going to get out of it in the long run. To overcome these roadblocks mainly the procrastination I should work on managing my time productively, completing one assignment at a time so that I don’t become overwhelmed.

    1. How do you motivate yourself to be successful?
Looking ahead, looking at the bright future exists as my main motivation for keeping successful. Every day I know I'm taking one more step towards creating my future by obtaining my degree, completing my education, and further maturing myself to where I can survive in the world. Not that I don't focus on the small things too. I try to find entertainment out of everything here at school. I find myself figuring out way to find lectures entertaining. I laugh at professor's jokes however bad they are, not to humor them, but eventually I start finding them funny and that makes it all the easier to get through a three hour lecture period.

I try to make this interesting for myself. I don't complain to myself how I despise reading this textbook, or I don't like reading this book, or this worksheet is horriblely boring. All that does is make school much more painful for myself, and if I find some sort of entertainment in doing this, I feel like I improve myself for all the better without having to pull my hair out over it. I try to engage myself in the chapter, which does leaps and bounds for reading comprehension and on quizzes.

    2. Are there some new ideas on motivation in Chapter 1 that you find interesting or helpful?
Honestly, I didn't get that many new ideas from Chapter 1 on motivation, not that it was a bad chapter, but I've been through most of these things before. For the most part is just came as a reminder for the things I've already been told and in some way sort of reinforced these beliefs.

One part I found interesting were the statistics on the amount of money people made by getting a degree and on versus the people that didn't. I really liked how the book reformed this idea and applied it to how every class you took you gained this much more money. I felt like that really helps motivate me towards accomplishing these goals to know just exactly how much this is helping me towards my future. Plus, it is nice to know if I'm breaking even for paying all of this. :)

Also, the Intrinsic/Extrinsic idea along with the Locus of Control I also found as another interesting topic. In my mind I never really differentiated these two aspects of studying/school work in my head. In somewhat helped me figure out the kind of environment I need to place myself in to be successful and the kind of mindset that would help me get through this long journey that is college. It almost felt zen to here this "locus on control" where if you create a perfect mindset over your schoolwork you will have taken responsibility for what you and you alone must accomplishment, and believing that itself helps a lot more in actually completing it.

  45. I motivate myself to be successful by knowing that I am in a better place then I was in high school. I know that the work may require more effort out of me, but I know that in the long run, I will be more satisfied and happier than I would be if I were still in high school. I feel that in the end, the harder I work for something, the more saisfying it will feel for me in the long run. I can motivate myself in other ways by knowing that I am going to school for myself and I do not care what others think of me or what they might say to me because I know that I am doing this to make myself happy and nobody else.

  46. If I ever considered dropping this class or any others because I may find them to difficult or to overwhelming I know way to keep myself motivated into keeping this course as well as any others. A big motivation for me is knowing that I am not alone in this situation. Many of my friends are in the same postion I am, whereas we all are taking the full tweleve units. It is also helpful to me to know that all of my friends find themselves in the same types of postions I do, for example when I have an upcoming test in a class I might not be doing so well in, my friend support me by reinforcing me to do my best and knowing that they are all in the same type of situation I am in where we can all support each other.

  47. After following through with Chapter 1 I was able to take a step back and really observe what my motivations were and some bad habits that I belonged to. I relate to this chapter a lot because I am able to assess my past mistakes with school, work and my social life. It helps me keep in touch with my determination to only become a better student, in touch with my goals to be successful in school, and most of all my aspiration to truly follow through with what I want to be in my life. This Chapter guided me to be more responsible and pin-point my motivations and stick to them. Losing sight of what keeps me going, will only let me slip and fall back on assignments that are due and worse. I will not let my high expectations for myself go down the drain again. This year is different and this class is with out a doubt just what I needed to maintain my goals in tact.

  48. 1. To motivate myself to be successful I try my best to keep up with the school work. Having this class as in an online class does create some difficulty because I am not always home and not always around a computer or somewhere I can access the internet. But it will not stop me from doing my best in the class and in school, for that matter. I nonstop think about my future and that pushes me to strive to be the best. And if Im not the best, I will become the best.
    2. I didnt really find chapter 1 to be that helpful because it was moreso a reiteration of things i already was aware of and things i already did to be motivated. It did, however, help me analyze my techniques and what I need to strangthen my skills on.
    3. If I think about dropping this class or college, the way to keep up with my studies is to simply keep my future in mind. And VERY close in mind. I dont want to let myself be somebody that drops out, ever. I want to be successful and my parents and anyone else in my surroundings to be impressed by the person that i have become all on my own.
    4. The roadblocks that i have endured in my past for school have been friends on the outside who attempt to persuade me to not take school that serious. I have too many people around me entirely focused on partying and bulding their social life that now, being motivated for school, i see they are staying in the same place and not really improving their lives. I dont want to fall into that. Therefore, school is my top and only priority for now.

  49. How do you MOTIVATE yourself to be Successful?

To motivate my person to do well and succeed i just need to think of my son and his future. I can say that before my son was born my motivation was to be the first generation of my family to finish a college degree. But now that I have a son my whole life turns around it. Every time I leave college I just think it will be my professional and economic stability and will happen to my child if I have to give your needs. He is my center and my universe.

  50. What are roadblocks to your success Some and how can you Overcome Them?

In my years of life and been through many stumbling blocks which often have taken me a long time to overcome. Finally I can say that was my disease Cancer that was detected for 4 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I have to admit that at first resigned and annoyed with this life. But now I see everything from another perspective and I enjoy every step I take in my life. I learned that you cannot spend all your time complaining about life, because if you look at your hand have someone in a situation worse than yours
