Chapter 4, Time Management, September 19-25

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text.  For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal.  If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it.  My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful.  Then I taught the topic for 30 years.  I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text.  I found myself distracted by things around the home.  I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores.  Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal.  I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do.  It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks.  I still found it difficult to get started.  I used the idea of a leading task.  I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write.  Then I would refine the writing the next day.  Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written.  Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country.  The CollegeScope material is my latest project.  Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it.  Now it is your turn.  Tell about something you accomplished in the past of something you hope to accomplish in the future.  See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. As far as my lifetime goals are I would like to start small and futher achieve bigger goals as my life continues. My first goal as of now is to successfully finsh community college. I got behind by missing a semseter and not doing so well my first semester. Now, a year later, I feel more confident in achieving my goal of finshing college. I know now how to get the best results from studying for exams, I know how to communicate better with college professors, by asking them questions and meeting with them about the material that I may not understand fully well. I know now how to study better without becoming to overloaded with material at once.

  2. Even though I do not have a perfect past there are things that I am proud of myself accomplishing. One of them happened in the fifth grade when I was ten years old. There was a school talent show, since I had a fear of singing in front of people I thought that this would be a great opportunity to display my talents I had in front of the entire school. I practiced and practiced for about a month or so trying to singing in front of other people, finally when the time came to show what I could do, I feel that I had total control over what I was doing. In the end, everyone told me how good I performed and it has always remained an important goal that I accomplished in my life, even though at the time I was only ten years old.

  3. One of my lfetime goals would be to run a marathon. It is always something I have wanted to do, and now I can say I have taken the first few steps in actually doing it. I have signed up for the October 16th Nike Woman's Marathon that will be held in San Francisco. I have only signed up for the half marathon which will be 13 miles in 6 hours. Not too bad. I have been training to run long distance and so far it is going well. I hope to one day run a full marathon and complete it in the time that I am given successfully and be happy with my accomplishment.

  4. A goal that I have accomplished would be transferring high schools. I had always wanted to go to a public high school and I asked my parents over and over. Eventually after my sophomore year they let me transfer. That isnt the hard part.. the goal was to make friends and become acquainted with the new campus and the new 3000 people that I had not even met yet. Through out the last 2 years of my high school career I attended this new public high school. Where I made friends, joined sports, and even clubs like A.S.B. where I held a position planning and conducting assemblies for the whole school. the 3,000 students plus the faculty. I enjoyed these two years very much and to say the least I felt as though I had accomplished transferring successfully.

  5. I have a few goals that I would want to accomplish over my lifespan... I am not going to list them all because I would get an overload of goals and things to do in my head. My most recent goal is to commit to my school work and make sure that I get the material successfully imprinted in my brain. I went through out high school just doing the minimum because school usually got ruled out when partying came into the picture. Now I have a 11 month old son and I want nothing more then to have a better future for me and my family. I have started a schedule for school but after reading this chapter I have learned some more successful ways of managing my time and will put them to good use. The 80/20 rule is going to be a great way for me to select what needs to be done right away from what can be held off until later, along with the ABC technique. I will be looking at my schedule every morning not as a struggle but as something that I know I need and really want to do to be successful that day in managing my time for school, chores, and family. My main obsticle is going to be finding the time do so what I need to do while watching my son. I have been trying to find friends and family that would help me out each day on watching my son while I get my school work done, if I am not able to find someone to help me out than I am going to take the time while he is playing on his own or napping. If I stay focused I will achieve my goal of getting through this semester with as much knowledge as possible as well as grasping techniques for future semesters as well.

  6. One of my main accomplishments in the past was graduating. I definitely was the type of person who tried to get by in high school with the minimum, when I graduated I felt that accomplishment that I was afraid I wasn't going to feel. Procrastination in high school was "my thing". I always waited until last minute because I got distracted by my social life. toward the end of my school year I found out I was pregnant. I was worried. I figured that I didn't have what I needed to bring a child into this world...so i decided to step up to the plate! I put all my focus into my school work a few weeks before class, talked to teachers and told them my struggles and was able to get help. I consider my baby boy a blessing from god and he was my motivation to do better. Now that he is here I have my motivation right in front of me every day to do better and better. I am going to try my best to get my education in college so that I can give us the life we deserve! I will be making a budget and a schedule to help me do so. I still have some troubles with procrastination but have definitely gotten a lot better and I keep getting better the more I try.

  7. I have so many goals in life, but my main goal is just to be successful. I want to be able to finish college, get a good job, and eventually own my own home. Being able to own my own house would be my ultimate goal. I need to focus more on my school work, so I can pass all of my classes. I am taking some very difficult and time consuming courses this semester. I need to spend more time studying. If I can do well in school, and graduate college, I’ll be on the right track. Finishing College will help me to get a good job; I want to become a registered nurse. I need to keep myself motivated, so I can continue to succeed in college, so I can get a good job, and someday have enough money to own a home. At times I do feel like giving up school, but I always think of my reasons why I am going to school in the first place. I remember that I am doing this to give myself a better life, and to be a successful person. Reminding myself of my goals keeps going each day.

  8. A past accomplishment of mine would be, passing my U.S. History class last semester. I hated history in high school, so I knew that it would be so much harder in college. History is something that just doesn’t interest me at all, so it is hard for me to remember. I was told that I needed to take history for my general education by my counselor, so I enrolled in the class. The class intimidated me from the start, and the teacher was just really strict. She had a lot of specific rules about every little thing. Instead of letting myself panic and not do well in the class I tried looking on the bright side of things. I had a friend in the class, so I figured that we’d work together to pass this course. I also remembered my goals; I needed to pass this class to get closer to finishing my G.E. I worked very hard in the class, and I spent a lot of time studying. I did very good overall in the course. I ended up with an A in the class; I was very proud of myself! I never thought I would be able to pass a college history class, and I got an A. This was a really big accomplishment for me because I did so horrible in history in high school, and I was able to do better in college. I am really glad I tried so hard in the class.

  9. A goal I am looking forward to complete is traveling around for a few months. Every year when vacation time arrives, my family and I normally go to an amusement park or to the beach and a few days with my parents. Though I always have fun, my dream vacation is traveling all over Mexico or most of it at least, for a few months. I would like to stay in the town where I was born for a few weeks and get to know the family I have not had a chance to meet. I would also like to go to Yucatan see and climb the pyramids. Stay in small towns where there is a lot of open area and no smog.

  10. To make this goal come true, I would have to get a good job, earn money, and of course pay off the bills I have. The first step I have taken to reach my goal is to return to college, though I have not decided on the major, I plan on completing the required courses and have the skill required to get a good job. I have also started putting money aside, even though it is not much right now, with time it will be enough to reach my goal. Making a budget plan and sticking to it, as recommended in this chapter will help me not only be debt free but will also help me reach my goal.

  11. One of my lifetime goals would be to get a degree in school. The time management techniques I would use is to set aside time to study and pass my pass my classes. I would make sure that I don’t have distractions so I could get my work done. My other time management technique would be to devote certain amounts of time to doing my work and taking breaks so I can stay on track and not burn out. I will try and make sure I turn in all my work on time so I do not get marked down for it. I would make sure I can communicate with my teacher in case I cannot make it to class so I know what is due for my next class. I would use the idea of a leading task and try and think of all the things I need to do to be successful in school. I would start with small tasks and then complete all my homework on time. Something I hope to accomplish in the future is getting my degree and start working in the medical degree.

  12. Something that I have accomplished in the past graduating high school. I worked really hard to get good enough grades to get through school. I spent a lot of time doing homework for my classes and it was all worth it. I made my family proud to see me graduate and I also made a lot of my friends happy as well. I know that I can do anything I put my mind to now because I got through high school. I realized that not everything in life has to be hard and life is what you make of it.

  13. A lifetime goal of mine is to reach my career goal. I already have taken the first few steps in getting into school and taking the right classes. I want to become a Dental Hygienist and I have a long road ahead of me but I am determined. There are certain things that can get in the way like lack of money, or doing the wifely duties but I try to manage them. I try to give my free time to studying that way I can get the proper amount of time for it. I will accomplish my lifetime goal and nothing will stand in the way. I know there will always be obstacles but I will overcome them.

  14. A goal that I accomplished of mine was finishing highschool and getting a high school diploma. I was a straight "a" student and then I suddenly became really sick. I had to leave my high school because since I couldn't go to school I was failing my classes. I went to a charter school and I had never known those types of schools existed. Charter school is an independant study based school. I had to teach myself from a book rather than have a teacher teach me about the subject. It was hard but I actually was able to get back on track and at some points I was ahead of where I should have been. I actually graduated earlier then I was supposed to and was able to get a job once I got better and rid of my illness.

A goal that I accomplished is having an awesome husband and two wonderful children. I waited for 30 years before I meet my perfect mate. He is everything I every dreamed of in a spouse. I had a few opportunities to marry earlier in my adult life but sometime told me that they were just not the "right" guy. Once I married him everything else fell into place. We purchased our first home and have two wonderful children. I have everything I always dreamed of as a little girl. It took a lot for me to believe I could have what my parents have. We have a great married (not perfect) but its everything I could have ever asked for!

  17. One of my proudest accomplishments of the past happened only a couple weeks ago when I was accepted into the first university I applied too. It took a lot of work to get to that point. I took almost fifteen units almost every semester, and devoted a lot of time to completing assignments and studying for exams. I talked to counselors to assure that all of the classes I was taking were aimed towards my major, and transferable. My hard work paid off, I never received anything less than a B in any of my classes. When it came time to transfer I just followed the step by step application instructions, and because of all the steps I took to get good transferable grades, I was accepted into Boise State for the Spring 2011 Semester.

  18. Something I would like to accomplish in the future would be time management. One way I can begin managing my money is by listing my income and spending a pay period observing what I buy. Then I can go through what I observe and make gradual changes, and find areas where I can cut back on my spending. Another way that would be useful in managing my money would to save ten percent of my paycheck in a savings account instead of putting my entire pay check into my checking’s account. Lastly, a small thing I can do to help curve my spending, is to carry a small amount of cash on me for emergencies, but leave my debit card at home, that way I can't make last minute unnecessary purchases.

A goal I have for the future is saving for retirement. I lost my job a few years back, so while I was jobless for eight months, I went through a good amount of my life savings. I have been employed for three years and still have not been able to start saving for retirement again. I wrote down a plan a few weeks ago when I found out my husband was being deployed for a year that I would start contributing to my 401K again in January. My husband is working on paying off the credit cards while deployed and I will work on budgeting my money better by limiting my spending on groceries, going out for lunch and dinner and start making coffee at home instead of buying starbucks on the way to work.

  20. A goal I have right now is to finish community college. This is my first semester in community college as I graduated high school just last year. This first semester started out a bit rough for me as I was dropped from all the classes I had registered for. So this semester I got lucky by taking 3 classes. This class, Sociology, and Psychology. Hopefully next semester will be different and I will get into ore classes like Math and English. I am very much excited to see whats in store for me in the next 2 years. I plan on transferring to a 4 year university and get my degree in Pharmaceuticals.

  21. A past goal of mine was during high school. To be honest I was a very smart student, except I was very lazy. I had good grades in all my classes since they did not require that much work. Although I had a pretty low grade in Economics. I kept telling my self to study for upcoming tests but I never did. After a while the last day of school was coming. That meant finals, and with a bad grade in Economics I was in danger of failing meaning not graduating and walking with my class of 2011. I studied and studied, and eventually it was test day. Everyone in that class had known I was in danger of failing, so peer pressure got to me. At the end of the test I found I was the first to finish, and that scared me even more. So I decided to go back through the entire test and check my answers. I ended up checking my answers twice and was the last one to turn in my test. After a while the tests were all graded, and my teacher called my name out and asked if I wanted to know. I said yes, and it turned out I got an 83%. I was very excited to know I passed, since I knew I was graduating and walking with my class. This was a very exciting day for me.

  24. 2. You have to study for a challenging math test.
Using information that I have read in this chapter, I, Hands down would use several time managing techniques in order to properly prepare myself for this challenging math test. Mentally and pshyically. First off, two weeks prior to the test I would go to the tutor bulding at school and see if I could do mathematical practice problems so that I could get the hang of any confusing elements I do not fully comprehend in my math course. After attending tutorial session, I will make sure that I am determind, motivated, and focused on passing the course. Not putting so much pressure on myself for the math test, and sleeping well for a couple of days prior to the test day. That way, the night before the test, I do not find difficulty in relaxing myself and sleeping a bit earlier than usual. The mornign of the test I will be sure to eat a proper breakfast and off I go. Im pretty sure if I follow every step I plan on taking for this kind of test, I could most definitely pass :)

  25. Much like yourself, one of my lifetime goals is to write a book. Amongst my friends, I am always the one person they rely on for advice. Mostly, for relationship advice. Although I have only been in one relationship in my lifetime, for some reason I know tons about relationships and how the opposite sex is. I grew up around a group of boys in my neighborhood and considered myself a tomboy, growing up, so this has given me in insight on how the male species functions. I never have trouble on finding just the perfect way to keep relationships working. My book will be based on my personal experience and my advice for those who go through a lot and need an extra hand on how to keep themself glued together and not allowing themselves to shatter to pieces over someone. Im a true optimist-realist, so my point of view in life is very up-beat, up-lifting, and comforting. Those who surround me can always turn to me for any type of advice and know that I will never judge them and give them my honest 2 cents. I have already commenced to work on this lifetime goal by each time I have a bit of spare time on my hands I write a little and save drafts on my phone or my laptop. So that eventually I could piece everything together and organize my book well so that maybe one day I could become as successful as yourself, and have my book published and read by many!

  26. There are many goals I have for my life. Always enjoying life, building a family and fulfilling a career are just to name a few. To reach my goal of enjoying life I would like to traveling around the world. This has always been a goal for me. I enjoy meeting different people and studying other cultures. I’ve always believed that the way I live my life is not the only way and I love to learn new ways to put life in a different perspective. This brings awareness into my life. Some of the countries I would like to visit include Indonesia, Greece, and India. There is so much to learn when you are traveling. Survival skills are a great asset when traveling and learning to deal with problems on a moment to moment basis is a great way to grow.

  27. To make traveling come true, I would have to earn and save money. The first step I have taken to reach my goal is managing my money better. I am monitoring how I spend my money and also I set a budget for every month of money that should be saved for traveling. I should stick with the budget and make sure I have always a source of income. As part of my goal I also decided to return to College and prepare myself for a second degree that would help me to earn more money and help to me to reach my goal.

Hello, it is not my intention to harm or offend anyone in anyway via sharing one of my personal life time goals. One of my life time goals includes becoming an evangelist: preaching the truth of Jesus Christ. Truly there is plethora of life time goals I would like to achieve, but some prioritize over others. I would love being able to travel providing counseling and teaching to people in need who are willing to hear my message of love. I have read the Holy Bible in the past which progresses me further into this life time goal of becoming an evangelist. A smart move is to apply time management to achieve this goal. Establishing a priority list with the ABC management techniques would be clearly beneficial. For example, consecrating myself over enjoying leisure time, which is comparing an A priority to a C priority. More so, avoiding and lessening the potent effects of procrastination from set goals within my life time goal: breaking up the length of the life time goal into feasible lengths. I rather find the 80/20 concept intriguing; I will perhaps test this with other smaller goals regarding time management to test its weight. A few of the time management ideas I already implement, such as rewarding myself with leisure time for progressing a goal. Conclusively, I find procrastination to be the most powerful enemy to my success, and these are the reasons I will usually procrastinate; fear of failure, need for excitement, and the misconception that I can attain excellence without effort.

  29. I have many life time goals, but one of the most important goals is to be successful in life and finish my Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. I have started with this goal since I started college. I managed my time as of which classes were required for me to take to start with the first step in my ultimate goal. I successfully passed most of the tough classes that I had, with my hard work. I have never worked before so being a full time student and an overload of classes for me it meant that I had a job. I met with my counselors about twice a semester to make sure that I am track on my transferring requirements and my degree requirements. I have been on track of my class assignments and try my best not to miss any, by meeting with my teachers if I needed help, getting tutor help, and add extra hours to my studies to accomplish my goal if required. The obstacle that met during my college years was financially, since books were and are very expensive and I was and am depending on my parents to pay for my college. Now, I am ready to transfer and to continue on with my goal until I finish.

  30. A past accomplishment goal of mine would be, trying to adapt with the American life when I first arrived to the US. I knew very little English and had very hard time making friends in my school. To teach myself more English I started reading books and tried my best to understand the words. Also, I started watching a lot of English shows which helped a lot. Over time my English became very good and I started talking with my class mates and eventually made friends. I worked very hard to learn the language and to adapt to my new life. I have accomplished that goal and I am very excited to accomplish the other goals that I have in my list.

  31. I have many goals that I want to fulfill in my lifetime, right now though the one I am focusing on has to do with finishing college and earning a degree. Ultimately I would like to have a career that gives me financial security/stability that’s also fulfilling. To have a career like that I must first finish college and earn a degree, to help achieve this techniques related to time management are necessary. First there’s the ABC’s of time management, understanding priorities, those that pertain to my lifetime goal (going to class), those that are necessary (paying bills), and then there are those that can be postponed (buying groceries or doing laundry). By applying this particular time management technique to my goal of finishing college I feel I can be successful.

  32. One of my lifetime goals would be to find a career where I can have time for my family and have the money to do all the fun things in life. I have had a couple of obstacles in the way of achieving this goal but luckily I have great family and spouse that support me. One of the biggest obstacles was my old job I had to work 40 + hours and they wanted me to give up a lot to help them. I did it for a couple years but saw that it would get me no where so I did my best get out of there but to still have the money to back me up. I saved up some money and gained the courage to finally quit. If I would have still been working there I would’ve never returned to college. I might have been able to take one course but at that pace I would never finish college. Now I am able to get back into school and have time for my family and my daughter. I hope to finish college and find the job that will give me the flexibility I need. I believe that by making schedules a lot can be accomplished. I love being organized and feel that having a schedule can help remind me of the important tasks I need to complete.

  33. A goal that I have accomplished would be finishing high school. Many people might think that it is really easy but for other people it is a lot more difficult. Time management helped me get projects done and showed me that procrastinating would get me poor grades. I had always left big homework assignments and project for the last minute and saw that this was not the best thing to do. I think by going through those experiences in high school it prepared me a lot for the college life. Now I like to start things early and work through them at a steady pace.

  34. One of the goals I am proud of accomplishing is completing my Master Degree in Education: Counseling. I had to manage my time between family, work, internship and classes. I had to set priorities and at the top of the list was attending and completing my classes successfully. I had to cut significantly my social life, family time and recreational activities. I am glad I did. In the years after that, I have been able to have more time for family, friends and social activities.

  36. Some obstacles that might get in the way when it comes to achieving this particular lifetime goal (finishing college and earning a degree) include procrastination and finances. In an effort to avoid procrastinating and to eliminate any panic caused by doing things at the last minute I will create and ultimately follow a schedule. A schedule or a master schedule if you will has times for studying, times for eating while at the same time leaving room for recreation/fun. Some other techniques one can use to avoid procrastinating include selecting a goal, visualize the progress being made, stick to a time limit, and most importantly follow through. On a side note something to remember is for every hour spent in a college class one should study two hours. As for finances preparing a budget and monitoring what I spend my money on are both good things to do especially when one wants to keep their finances in check.

  37. One of my lifetime goals is to own a home/condo by the beach (US or Mexico). I hope to be able to sell my current condominium and buy my dream home in the future. I realize that I have to make more money and save more to one day accomplish that. I have taken steps to increase my income. I plan to give a priority “A” towards those steps that will take me closer to my goal. I think that technique is so valuable and I can avoid the “C” fever.

I'm fairly young so I don't really have any examples from my past, so I'll post a sort of counter example to what you should do.

In my AP U.S. History class we had this research paper that we had about 4 months to do. It had to be fully cited and the whole nine yards with 30 pages of notes on various topics along with an essay to close it all up. What I should of done was do the initial first step of working on the project, which is to to get blank paper and books to notes from. Then I should have split maybe 3 hour chunks across the four months to take notes and read the books. Probably on the weekend. Then afterwards reward myself by doing something I enjoy. While using the ABCs of time management to organize my time for the days I did work on the project.

In reality, the weekend before it was due I checked out 28 books from the library at once. Then literally stayed up and worked on the project constantly for about 48 hours. This probably had to be one of the most miserable experiences of my life. The second time (there were two sections to the project) I learned my lesson to a degree and thankfully spent about 2 weeks doing the project. I really need to start these things even sooner than that though.

In the future I hope to accomplish getting my master's degree. One of the most difficult parts of this is the time required to get done with such a feat. Along with the field I want to get it in being fairly difficult (engineering). I realize, being at the start of college, that this is doing to take me 7 years at minimum, when I'm 25, which is honestly fairly daunting. I'm going to NEED to pace myself in my work and not procrastinate things off to the last minute, and keep education as my priority. Since many things will be flying in and out of my life in the next decade.
