Chapter 12, Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle, Nov. 14-20

Chapter 12 contains health information for college students in the areas of nutrition, avoiding addictions, protection from disease, getting enough sleep and dealing with stress.  It is based on the premise that we will be living longer in the 21st Century.   Also a college education is a big investment and it is important to enjoy it over a long lifetime.  Here are some ideas for discussion.  You can also add any topic related to health or college and career success.  You can make one comment of 200 words or two comments of 100 words each.

1.    These health facts are obvious and well known:
•         Smoking causes lung cancer.
•         One out of three Americans is overweight or obese.
•         Illegal drug use is addictive and limits success.
•         Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.
•         Not practicing monogamous or safe sex can lead to STD’s including AIDS.
Knowing this information, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?

Assume that you are writing magazine article, "The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health."  What ideas would you include in this article?

Share some of your intention statements for maintaining your good health.
I wish all of you good health!  Marsha Fralick

  1. For my first blog post, I would like to comment on how and why young college students are not getting enough sleep and then I would like to include five steps to that could help reduce this dilemma going on with college students and how it is affecting their sleeping habits. A reason that a lot of young college students that are not getting enough sleep would be because, they are becoming stressed or trying to do everyting at once or procrastinting on their school assingments. This can lead to long hours of school work, working late into the night, reduced sleep in maximum amounts. Some of the five steps I would include to fix this problem is: 1. Making a day to day plan on working on assingments. 2. Keep working on an assingments no more than two hours, therefore, reducing stress. 3. Take a break from doing the assingment and letting the brain refresh. 4. Work out a schedule so a student can get enough time to sleep 5. Students should talk to a consulor if stress increases and they cannot fall asleep themselves.

  2. For my second blog post, I would like to comment on how illegal drug use limits success in college and try to explain why college students do drugs and explain other alternatives to drug use that students can use. I believe that college students use illegal drugs mainly because of the stress that can and does come up in a students college life. Students can obtain quick and easy access to drugs and drugs provide temporaily relief of stress. Although they come with life long consequeses. There are many alternative to using drugs as a stress reliver. One of my personal alternatives that I use is that I listen to music. For me, music lets me express my stress in a postive way and helps me releive my stress without hurting myself or others. I find a personal connection with the music and that for me is my drug, but a healther type of drug.

  3. I am writing an article in a magazine on how to improve ones health. Maintaing health is an easy thing to do when given the right resources. There are five easy steps to maintain good health that everyone can do in one way or another. The first step starts with your attitude. Having a positive attitude will immediately improve your attitude. It will also help to have a good attitude when things in your life get tough or things could possibly hinder your health. The second step to maintaining good health would be a balanced diet. There are many different meal plans or calorie counter processes to maintain a balanced diet. Although eating healthy generally will do the trick. Your body needs protein in one form or another, and plenty of fruits and veggies, also carbs, starch and fiber are necessary parts of a balanced diet. The third step to maintaining good health would be to drink eight glasses of water daily. Your body is mostly made up of water and people can get dehydrated easier than you think. Water keeps your mind alert and your body stress free. The next step is to exercise frequently. Exercising is wonderful for the body. It burns calories, increases metabolism, increases strength and endurance and gives the body more energy. Exercise is a great way to stay healthy and fit at the same time. The last step is to get enough rest. The average person needs between 6 and 8 hours of sleep. Sleeping is a very vital factor in health. not getting enough rest can cause stress on the body in many ways. Breaking out can occur, bladder mishaps begin to happen, head aches occur, mood swings start happening, and you are more prone to illness because your body's immune system is down. There are 5 easy steps to not maintain just good health, but great health. Those 5 steps are to start with your attitude, have a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, exercise often and get enough rest.

  4. For my first post I think People smoke even though they know the facts because they either don’t care or they feel like the facts are not enough for them to quit smoking because they are already addicted. Some facts do not scare people enough to not smoke because some are still skeptical about the effects of smoking. Some people still think smoking will help them lose weight or look cool so they keep smoking. People over eat even though they know the facts about it because they like to eat and they do not care about the problems they get. Some people have something in their mind that triggers the over eating like a traumatic event and they find comfort in eating so they cannot stop. Some people practice unsafe sex because they believe misconceptions that nothing wrong will happen and that it feels better when in reality there are a lot of consequences of having unsafe sex.

  5. The five most important steps to maintaining good health would be first to eat right and have at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day. Second would be exercise for 30 minutes or more a day. Third would be to use distressing and relaxation techniques daily so the stress wont build up. Fourth would be to get at least 8 hours of sleep a day to be well rested. Fifth would be to drink eight glasses of water daily to stay hydrated and keep your body functioning normally

Why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?

In my opinion is because they are careless and think that because a lot of people do it so they think it is okay. What they don't realize is that they are not going to live forever and they are missing out on the young healthy years of their lives. These years of youth is the time they could be making productive decisions to decide their futures. Also these bad habits may be used as a way to escape all the pressures, stress and confusion about the unknowns the future withholds. Some ideas for coping with this stress include avoiding bad choices and fulfilling your time with healthily activities and diet.

Some of my tips for maintaining good health include exercising daily to help relieve stress. Doing activities and using your body helps your mind remain happy and therefore helps with a positive daily activity. In addition to physical activity it is important to maintain a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables and grains. Also working on your sleeping patterns, continuing to get 8 hours a sleep a night will aid in a healthy lifestyle. This combination of food and sleep helps feed the mind to think clearly creating a more positive space to grow and learn amidst the chaos of stress.

  8. Why do people continue to harm themselves:
Smoking, using drugs and drinking are addictive and like everything else that is addictive it is hard to stop using if you don’t have the support from family and friends, but most importantly a person is unable to stop if he or she has little or no will power to rid themselves of the addiction. Though it can be started for many reasons I believe the main one would be peer pressure and wanting to be in the “in crowd.” When a person is not getting enough sleep it is probably due to work or studying too much, but in most cases I think it is because of too much socializing (partying); again wanting to be in the “in crowd.” Having unsafe sex mostly occurs when a person is too intoxicated or drugged to think clearly; but also because the person thinks she or he can’t be touched by the disease; thinking that they are immune. Also for confiding in the partner, assuming that there was no other or that that person is clean. When a person is obese, it is due not having the knowledge of how to eat healthy, not getting enough exercise, and eating too much fast food. It can also be because of wanting to be like others, and when it is not accomplished they just binge on food. At the end I think it all has to do with peer pressure and having low self-esteem that people harm themselves and others.

  9. Option One: In my opinion the reasons why people continue to smoke, overeat, use drugs, practice unsafe sex and miss out on sleep are not good reasons. The vast majority of people that smoke are aware that it causes cancer and eventually leads to death. I think that people still smoke because they either just don’t care that smoking can kill them or they think it won’t happen to them. My grandfather has been smoking cigarettes since he was ten years old and he tells everyone that he will quit when he is ready to. This is what a lot of people say, but in my opinion they are too weak to quit. Tobacco is very addictive and hard to quit if you aren’t serious about quitting. Some people quit when it is too late, like when they are diagnosed with cancer and find out their dying. Then they are ready to quit because reality sets in that cigarettes aren’t worth it, but it is too late. Furthermore, when it comes to overeating I think a lot of people do it because they are depressed. I have several friends that do eat when they are depressed, and they are overweight. Illegal drug use is out of control, I have several family members who are struggling with drug addictions. The reasons why people use drugs are different for each person; I could not think of any reason why to use drugs. However, if you are prescribed drugs by a doctor I think that is okay. But in some cases people become addicted to their medications and as a result start using harder drugs. When it comes to missing out on sleep I can understand why this might happen. For me I miss out on sleep whenever I am stressed out and cannot sleep or I have to stay up late for important reasons. Sometimes I have to stay up and do homework or clean, and I have no choice but to stay up. Some people have to work late or work early and that is another reason that people can miss out on sleep. Lastly, everyone is aware of the risks of getting STDs, but they still unsafe sex. There are plenty of free birth control options at place, so I am not exactly sure why people continue to practice unsafe sex. I would just call it carelessness and it needs to stop because we have so many ways to prevent this problem!

  10. A lot of people know the consequences of doing drugs yet they continue to do them. Everyone knows that being overweight is not healthy but they do not exercise. People know that STDs and HIV/AIDS can be transmitted if protection is not used but they engage in unprotected sex. Why is our population so ignorant? I believe this is due to the fact that they are not happy with their lives. They see no real reason to live longer. I also believe that a lot of people in this world think that they are invincible. That bad things and consequences will not affect them, this may be true for some for the time being but in the long run it will all catch up to you. Many of the rich have too much time and money on their hands and so they turn to partying and alcohol which then leads to bigger drugs. I would love to see the statistics on how many rich people consume drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. I know the numbers would be up there.
It is very important that teachers keep educating the youth so that they are informed of these horrible consequences. I can only imagine what the world would be like if people did not know of the consequences.

I am going to write about why people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex. I have been told my friends they smoke for many reasons, one being it helps them from eating too much which helps with overeating and to help relieve stress. The activity may help with one situation but it causes other health related issues. I think people overeat due to depression and obsession with food. I think some people don't realize they are overeat to hide inner issues. I believe people take illegal drugs to also take away pain they are feel from issues they are dealing with whether its abuse, depression or other issues. I can relate to missing out on sleep but I believe most college students miss out on sleep due to procrastinating on studying or doing homework or staying out too late partying with friends. I think most if not all people who have unprotected sex believe they are not at risk of contracting a disease or worst a disease that could take your life the the life of your partners. Some people think that if they are in a committed relationship they can't contract a disease but unfortunately some people are not as committed as others.

  12. Why young college students practice unsafe sex or monogamous sex that leads to STD's because binge drinking they become drunk and lose their five senses not thinking. when two college students are at a party and there is alcohol involved they drink and that’s a place for people to meet and mingle one too many alcohol drinks they get loose and engage in sexual activity without thinking about being safe. Not knowing if each individual are checked for STD's they can spread sexual transmitted diseases to one another. It’s important that everyone is responsible about practicing safe sex and being aware what one individual is doing. They continue to do so because they are young and reckless and like to party without a care in the world, they need to stop and think of others.

  13. If I have to write, “The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health”, I would include, life is suppose to be fun to live it to the fullest, the number 1 thing to always have a positive attitude and not be stress with negative thoughts, but be at peace. Stress can be harmful to your health so don’t stress out just relax. Step 2 to be healthy in and as well as out which means physically active. Going for a hike outdoors is good for your lungs and your body being out in natural is refreshing. Number 3 is not smoking and taking illegal drugs which can damage you and the people you love, so say no to drugs, smoking, and alcohol. Number 4 is being around people you love and love you back and doing stuff together is easy than doing it all alone. Number 5 is keeping yourself educated about everything keeping updated on current events, general education, the world, and learn how to books will keep you entertain. Staying healthy is the way to go to living a long life.

The question at hand, why people continue to practice habits which are detrimental to an individual’s health, is a very complex one indeed. I believe that a large portion of this conflict is due to the low awareness level of the actual and realistic threat. The health facts listed for example, even though I have heard or read these facts before, they did not make a memorable impact as they should have. Recently, I was reading an article about how congress planned to pass a bill that would vividly, and perhaps even grotesquely, picture the serious health threats posed by cigarettes on the consumer. This bill, however, did not pass through. I believe it would have made more of an impact, but it still seemed out of place. Therefore, part of the answer lies in the person practicing an ill habit: if the person were a first-hand witness of the cause and effect, regarding these statements, then I believe they would be inclined to avoid such conduct. Yet, this question is not entirely resolved because it has many parts. Looking at the psychological aspect of this problem, it has to do with the desire and pleasure received by an individual. Freud stated that humans are inherently evil, and as such are inclined to behave accordingly. Despite all of these things, I personally believe that an exterior force has to intervene to make a complete switch of lanes. In my opinion, that Force is the Lord God Jesus Christ.

  15. Why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?
That’s the age-old question, why do people continue to smoke knowing full well the negative health effects. For some reason or another educating people about the negative effects of smoking doesn’t seem to have any effect on smokers. For some smokers the link between smoking, lung cancer, and ultimately death is just a myth that has yet to be proven. Oftentimes in pressure situations people find that smoking has a calming effect. The younger the person the more vulnerable they are to experimentation and the more likely they are to dismiss the dangers of cigarette smoking. Once someone starts smoking it becomes addictive (the pleasure or satisfaction a smoker gets when smoking a cigarette can be hard to part with) and they then surround themselves with others who smoke cigarettes. In many cases those who are surrounded by other people who smoke cigarettes find it difficult to stop smoking.
With regards to overeating there are a number of reasons why an individual might be overeating. A few reasons why an individual might overeat include: boredom, stress and anxiety, irritation, frustration, worry, overwhelmed, in need of love and comfort, upset and hurt or just a lack of willpower. In most cases I think it’s not simply because the person does not care I think there’s some underlining issue, something that is not being addressed. Emotional eating I think is often the case, eating can give people a feeling of control and it can be used as a distraction from the problems one might want to avoid. There are those who quit an addiction (smoking or drinking) and soon find themselves eating all the time in an effort to curb cravings.
As for not getting enough sleep, there are only so many hours in the day and for some sleep is not that high of a priority. With deadlines needing to be met and juggling various things at the end of the day one might have difficulty shutting off their mind. At night when one is stressing or worrying about something their mind is not at peace and as a result they can’t get to sleep.

  16. My first post is going to be about, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex? People choose to do the most harmful things to their body and to their selves for the simplest reason “everyone else is doing it.” People who smoke, overeat, and take illegal drugs think all these bad things will make their lives better and they will feel better about themselves. Once they try it they can become addicted. People who try it, also think that their world would be better, the world they live in within themselves. People who miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex, these people know the consequences and yet still practice it. In other words, they really don’t care if they will live longer or healthier, because they think they have nothing to live for. They forget all about the people who are surrounding them that care for them.

  17. My second post is going to be about “The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health." The first step in maintaining you good health is by having healthy nutrition meals. The next step is exercising for at least thirty minutes a day. The third step is sleeping well, and having that comfortable and good sleep every night. In addition, having a positive attitude every day and positive thoughts. Finally, try to use relaxation techniques to relax the body muscles and to remove most of the stress. These five steps can maintain a good healthy life.

  18. Obesity exists as a rising trend in American health as stated by the question and the text. This problem attributes to multiple problems the first of which being overeating. Overeating is when you eat more than the calories you burn, or something around those guidelines. You burn more calories when you stay active and exercise more. A big problem with this is the rising amount of unhealthy food particularly: junk food, pizza (WHICH GOT RECLASSIFIED AS VEGETABLE IN CALIFORNIA, GOOD LORD) , Soda, and other similar food. These foods have a massive amount of corn syrup and the like, which contain massive amounts of sugar, salt, carbohydrates, and more. These tend to not be as filling as "good foods for you" i.e. whole grain, fruits, vegetables, etc. yet contain way more of the problems as stated above. So, in this sense in these days it is much easier to overeat without knowing it.
Another problem to this is a lot pf people overeat to deal with various things. One of the biggest one is depression. They will use food to cheer themselves without worrying about their fitness because of their depression. Going with what the book said stress also is another thing that gets added onto this because it is a side effect of depression.
Other factors to obesity include the lack of exercise mainly because of the invention of new forms of entertainment (tv, computer, etc.), fast and cheap transportation (cars, buses, planes, etc.), and the invention of the internet to allow for easier ways to get things to yourself (fast food, ordering pizza, etc.). These things promote the lack of exercise and a more comfortable lifestyle. People tend to view exercise as something cumbersome. The lack of exercise lowers the amount you can eat without going over the amount of calories you burn each day because exercising is one of the easiest ways to stay active.
The final problem with the appearance of widespread obesity that I will address is the difficulty of getting out of it. It seems easy to get out of by not eating as much and exercising more, but it could be compared to a sort of drug. Yes, you can stop for a short while, but in reality you need to establish a healthy pattern. Plus, there are a lot of confusing factors when it comes to loosing weight. One of which is that if you're eating less and all at once, which people tend to do this will increase your weight in the long run since your body won't be burning off fat all day, only after you eat. Another being that eating less generally doesn't do the job when it comes to loosing weight. Since eating less for a period time only looses that weight temporarily until you fall back into the habit (or diet) of eating junk food.

  19. Share some of your intention statements for maintaining your good health.
I intend to exercise daily at least 20 minutes: I plan to accomplish this by walking two 10-minute breaks at work. On the days I do not work, I plan to walk after dinner routinely. That will be the minimum and the ideal will be to have a full daily work out of 30 -60 minutes.

I intend to choose healthy meals: I plan to follow the simple rule of having in my plate 2/3 of fruit, vegetable or grains. I will choose lean meats too.

I intend to find a new hobby that will help me keep by body in shape and another hobby to keep my mind healthy. I plan to explore dancing and or outdoor walking (instead of my usual in gym workout).

I intend to find the good in life by looking at the glass half-full. I will take it one day at a time and focus on the positive things that surround me.

I intend to prioritize family life. I feel the most happy when I am surrounded by those I love and love me. I value my family relationships and sometimes I find myself not having enough time for them. Therefore, I plan to make it a priority to stay in touch and visit with them more often.

  20. my first post is going to be about smoking causing lung cancer. many people smoke and think its not going to affect them and some even do it just to relieve stress or because other people do it. smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer because of all that nikatin, clorin and smoke coming into your lungs. people also do not know that if you just want to try it once it can get addicting. there is something called 2nd hand smoking. for example if you have a child and you smoke around your child he/she can get lung cancer or even asthma. these people know the consequences and yet still practice it. In other words, they really don’t care if they will live longer or healthier, because they think they have nothing to live for.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Knowing that these 5 things take away from your health why do people still do them? Because life can be difficult for people who don't have their priorities straight. People these days can either choose to live happily easily, or have a difficult distressed life easily as well. Which do you choose? People choose to do things such as drink, smoke, use illegal drugs or over eat because they are under depression and want to feel better about themselves. Not getting enough rest and stressing out can make these addictions even worse and can lead you to doing dumb things, such as having unprotected sex. When you don't feel good physically you want an "upper" to make you feel better or a high to make you relaxed. What people forget is that it's only for the moment, when you wake up in the morning your problems will still be there. If you decide to not take that route and instead lead a healthy happy lifestyle, then the stress will limit and you will start thinking positive thoughts. Getting enough sleep will give you the energy to do more each day and you will feel like you have less needs for addictions that are bad for you. Give yourself a break and realize that everyone has difficult lives it's just the way that you deal with the difficulties that make you different and happier then others. Being different is not a bad thing in the long run, people who try to be normal often try to "fit in" with others and that leads to addiction as well.
