Chapter 11, Critical and Creative Thinking, Nov. 7-13

For this week,  make two comments.  For the first comment, give an example of a fallacy in reasoning.  See my examples below.  For the second comment, give your answers to the creative thinking questions below.  Have fun with the creative thinking.

Critical Thinking:

Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning.  Here are some examples: 1. When my children were very young, I would tell them to brush their teeth in the evening.  I told them that if they did not brush their teeth, the sugar bugs would eat their teeth all night and eventually their teeth would turn green and fall out.  By predicting dire consequences, we try to influence behavior.  This is an example of using slippery slope.  Maybe some of you child development majors would have a better way of getting children to brush their teeth, but this worked for me.  2.  Here is another example:  When my daughter was in middle school, she died her blond hair black.  I asked her why she did it and she said that she was tired of blond jokes.  She was the victim of the stereotype that all blondes are dumb.  3.  You will also find many examples of fallacies in reasoning in commercials and political speeches.  Can you provide other examples of fallacies in reasoning?

Creative Thinking:

For the creative thinking part, read about creativity and brainstorming and have a little fun with this exercise.  Provide at least 3 answers to these questions:  1. How is a peanut like you?  Here are my answers.  1.  A peanut is wrinkled, like me.  2.  A peanut is curvy like me.  2.  I have a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell.  How is a peanut like going to college?   In every classroom there are at least 2 nuts, the instructor and at least one student.  The squares on the peanut remind me of rows of chairs in the classroom.  3.  There is usually something good on the inside.

  1. The fallacy I choose to make an example out of is the appealing to vanitiy or persuasion by the use of compliments. I have seen this used and I have used it myself in various situations. For example, when I was still in high school, people would try to get me to either vote for them in the school election,or vote for them in senior prom postions by trying to get people to vote for them by giving out candy and other items, but they did not address any of the particular issues that our school had at that time.

  2. For my second post I will answer the questions posted above. First I will provide two answers to the first question, "How is a peanut like me?" First, a peanut is like me because a peanut has a hard outer shell that can be sometimes tough to break open. This is like me because I have a hard outer shell due to me being an introvert type and that allows me to be tough to "crack open". In other words, it can be tough for me to state my opnions towards others, because I am a shy, quiet, and introverted type of person. Another way a peanut is like me, is that a peanut is that it has unquie designs on the peanut shell. This is like me because I think I am different than other people and I feel that I am an unquie person that I can show to the outside world through my clothings, for example. How is a peanut like going to college? A peanut is like going to college because when peanuts are in a jar, they are surronded by many different peanuts in one enviorment.

  3. Fallacy is all around in todays times. Such as when my friend told me she was disgusted with all meats and the horrible thought of killing an animal for food disgusted her. She would buy all vegetarian foods and she tried to change my diet and her boyfriends diet. She was very upset about the meat industry and the amount of meat that was served in our school cafeteria. The fallacy is that her favorite pair of shoes are her all leather thigh high brown boots. she was so against mean and the killing of animals, yet she wears them

  4. A peanut is like me because i feel as though sometimes i am as small as a peanut in this big world. I feel as though a peanut is like me because it is curvy and I have a curvy figure which is sometimes disproportional. A peanut is like me because it differs in tan's. Sometimes it is normal and sometimes it is roasted and when i play in the sun i become a roasted peanut. A peanut is going to college because it fell from its mother tree and has the same qualities as its mother and the mother tree went to college, got an education, was planted and became a tree and had the baby peanut and they share the same qualities so the peanut is going to college as well.

  5. The fallacy of appealing to vanity is something I am very familiar with. My ex boyfriend would constantly butter me up with complements before asking me to do something for him, or telling me bad news. One example of this was when he called me, told me he wanted to pick me up and take me to the movies. When we were in line for our tickets he looked at me and said, “You look absolutely beautiful tonight; I am so lucky.” Him saying that made me smile and feel good of course, but I figured there was some kind of catch. Immediately after him saying that he also said, “I don’t want you to go to your friend’s party tomorrow; you should spend more time with me, right?” And I agreed with him. I have no idea why because I always spend time with him, so he was not right. I think I agreed because he made me feel pretty, and then said that.

  6. Creative thinking: 1. A peanut is like me because my outer appearance is way different than my inner contents. A peanut is like me because I have an outer hard shell, but it can be cracked. A peanut is like me because I have flaws on my outer appearance like the peanut has flaws on its shell. 2. A peanut is like going to college because you’ll never know what it is really like until you go inside(inside a classroom or just on campus). A peanut is like going to college because it may look rough on the outside, but there is something good on the inside. What I mean by that is the classes and homework may all look rough and intimidating, but getting past all of that “rough” looking stuff is the softer side of college. Once you get the hang of it you see it can be done. A peanut is like going to college because it is curvy and has bumps. We all face bumps and humps on our journey through college.

  7. Example one. 1. The fallacy of appealing to ignorance happened to me when I was growing up my dad would always tell me that if he did not send her money she was going to die back in her country. So when I grew up and had my own money and refused to give it to her my dad would say if we don’t give her money she will starve when I knew she refused to get a job. I was not the reason she was hungry but my dad made it seem like I was the cause because I could not give her money. it does not make sense why I would be the cause of her actions. This was an appeal to ignorance because I did not know any better at the time so I thought things were my fault.

  8. 1.A peanut is like me because it has to go through a lot of hard times to get where it wants to be.2. A peanut is rough on the outside but one you get to the inside it has a soft sensitive interior like me. 3. A peanut has many imperfections that some people can see right away and some wont see till later. How is a peanut like going to college? 1. There is a beginning, a middle, and an end to college just like a peanut. 2.A peanut seems like it is so hard to figure out in the beginning but once you get used to it, its easy to crack. 3.A peanut is like college because the routine to figure it out never changes. you still have to go through all the same steps to figure it out.

Can you provide other examples of fallacies in reasoning?

The fallacy in reason example that my dad always used to use on me was is I swallowed my gum then I would grow a bubble gum tree in your stomach. This really worked and I believed him at first and I never would swallow my gum. Only until I told my friends of this fallacy, did I realize it was a fallacy. Another example of a fallacy is when the advertisements announce that you can eat everything you want and still loose weight. This is called wishful thinking because we all wish it would be like that to lose weight. Unfortunately it is a fallacy that the advertisements use to entice you to use their product.

How is a peanut like you? Three reasons a peanut would be like me are 1. A peanut is tan and that is also the color of my skin. 2. A peanut is small. 3.Sometimes peanuts take awhile to get to the inside.
How is a peanut like going to college? A peanut is like going to college, once you crack the shell, the inside might taste good or it might not but you will never know until you get inside. A peanut is like college in that is gives you nutrients and protein to feed you too keep going. A peanut is like college in that you might choke or it might get stuck in your throat (barriers or difficulties) but in the end it always makes it to your stomach and you can always digest it, if you take the time.

When my youngest daughter was a toddler she picked her noses all the time, at home, grocery store, restaurants, everywhere...it didn't matter. I tried everything to get her to stop from telling her I would buy her a prize if she went without picking her nose for 1 week, that lasted for about 2 days and I tried it again but no success. I also tried to take her favorite toys from her but that didn't work either. I finally came up with the best solution. I told her that if she continued to pick her nose the little monster in her nose will slowly eat her finger until its no longer there. The first few days she continued to pick her nose and then she hit finger on something pointy in her nose. She looked up at my and said mommy the little monster in my nose just bite my finger. You are right there is a little monster in my nose. For a few days she didn't pick her nose but that didn't last long. She started picking again. I just kept reminder her about the monster and the monster biting her finger. She evenually stopped picking her nose. This worked but a year ago my daughter asked me about the little monster in her nose and if it was real. I told her no but told her it was for a good reason.

  12. For my first comment I will use jumping to conclusions fallacy: A couple of weeks ago when I arrived at work the owner of the company was already at the office; he usually after 8am, sensing something was wrong I put my things away and went to his office. He informed me there was a big problem with one of the projects and that he was giving me a warning (written, which would go in my file), never having received one, I was very surprised. There was a job that needed an inspection prior to pouring concrete; the inspection was not called in, and the work was already done. To fix the mistake, the concrete would have to be removed, inspection called, and concrete re-poured; costing the company thousands of dollars. Since I am the one who calls in the inspections, I was being blamed for not doing my part. After listening to the details I very calmly explained that I only work 3 days; one of the days I was off, it was decided by the supervisor the work would be done. He knew the inspection had to be called in, and was aware I was not there. Needless to say the supervisor was the one who “forgot”. Conclusion was made that I was to blame, before knowing all the facts or even before asking the supervisor. Thankfully everything was resolved, even the concrete problem was not so big, for after speaking with the inspector, he allowed only a small area be removed for the inspection.

  13. How is a peanut like you?
The peanut is like me because though it has a hard shell, the inside is what counts and is good. Trust has to be earned. For a peanut you have to work at least a little to get to the good part. For me you have to work at earning my trust, before I can become a good friend.
How is a peanut like going to college?
When you get a lot of peanuts together you can make peanut butter; in turn a peanut butter sandwich. In college, you take all your required classes make it to a college degree; in turn get a good paying job.

  14. critical thinking- fallacy:

I tell my son since he was 2 years old that he have to brush his teeth every day in the morning and at night before sleeping, becuase if not the spiders were going to eat his teeth. In this way I could implement into his daily routine brush his teeth. Now is funny because every time that he eat something with sugar or chocolate he go to the bathroom to brush his teeth.

The peanut is very special like me, therefore we only treat with some special and unique person. 2. We can be dangerous for the life of someone in our road. 3. we are like a gemstone, dark and ugly without the polish but when you opened you find something special.

  16. For this assignment of Creative thinking: I believe I am like a peanut because 1) It is exotic looking just like me “ha, ha”; I am often asked if I am from the Middle East or Spain”. 2) I can be pale or tan just like the peanut toasted or untoasted; 3) it is easy to open and I am easy to approach/friendly. Now, how is the peanut like going to college? 1) It may look scary looking but it is good for you. 2) The good peanuts are expensive just like the good colleges and 3) it has curves just like the many paths/curves we take in our educational paths.

Critical thinking involves using new perspectives. For example, when I was in high school I heard a lot about evolution and so forth regarding Darwin. I had an instructor who told our class, during that time, that he would not teach us the theory behind it because he was not a descendant of an animal. After further reasoning on my own, I have come to a conclusion. Evolution is based on the big-bang-theory for the most part. A theory upon a theory is an obvious fallacy in my opinion. Further reasoning is simple: big-bang theory does not equal “matter cannot be created nor destroyed.”

So, how is a peanut like me? I have a peanut brain. I have a similar brownish color, more like the roasted peanuts. More so, I have a carbon make-up at the molecular level which is similar to a peanut’s. Well, a peanut is like college in a sense because sometimes a peanut comes up that tastes awful and simply disgusting, in turn causing it to be spit out. Secondly, a peanut is like going to college because first one has to work at the peanut’s outer shell, feeling the peanut’s ridges, and finally cracking it open. Likewise, is college, one has to grasp the concept of working hard, but at the end is a nice buttery peanut taste.

  20. An example of a fallacy is what my Mom used to tell us when we were kids in order to have us clean up after ourselves. She would tell us that the devil lives in dirty places so we needed to keep our rooms and our house clean. It worked. I no longer believe that but as a result, I developed a good habit and to this day, I like to keep my workspace and my home clean and organized.

How is a peanut like you?
Just like a peanut I myself have flaws. Nobody is perfect and no one peanut is perfect either. The peanut actually can be used for a variety of things. Case in point: oil, make-up, medicines, peanut butter etc. I too have many different sides: daughter, friend, college student, coworker, etc.
How is a peanut like going to college?
When one bits into a peanut they never know whether the experience is going to be pleasant or not, they go into it without knowing the outcome or how their going to react. In a way one goes into it blind. Just like college, one is entering into something that they don’t know the outcome too. You can go into it expecting (hoping) that the peanut will taste delicious or that college will be an ultimate success, but you don’t know that to be true.

After reading about fallacies in this chapter I don’t know if it’s just me or not but I am now noticing that some people I know use them a great deal to get what they want. An example of a fallacy in reasoning is: Oh, I’ve been sick. That’s the reason why I missed the deadline. I would say this is an appeal to pity, where emotion is used to take the place of logic. In this particular scenario the student is giving the teacher a sob story in hopes of persuading the teacher to give them a pass.

    Critical thinking:

A still fairly believed fallacy today is the belief that the existence of evolution implies that human being's ancestors are monkies. This belief holds two fallacies: slippery slope and straw man. It is a slippery slope because there were dozens if not hundreds of steps in between humans as they are and monkies. (implying that our evolution line even goes back to monkies, which it doesn't, but to their ancestors) People aren't allowed to treat those dozens of steps as one step in saying that humans are related to monkies, when in reality human's ancestor's ancestor are related to the monkies ancestor's ancestor. It is also a straw man because people argue against evolution by attacking this belief, which in definition is a straw man since they are attacking their version of evolution and not the version of the people who researched it.

    Creative Thinking:

    1. How is a peanut like you?
    1. A peanut requires fairly specific growing conditions in order to thrive and be harvested for gain. In the same way I require specific "growing" conditions as I age. Via a loving family, a strong education, caring friends, etc. in order to become a functioning adult with a productive job to support the society that cultivated and harvested me.
    2. A peanut has a useless and well-known outer shell in the same way that people and me specifically have outward appearances that in the end are pointless, yet they hold and protect a valuable inside that others enjoy.
    3. The peanut just had a record breaking bad harvesting season that drove peanut prices way up in that same way education had a horrible season, not in harvest, but in support with extremely bad cuts and the like that is leading to a fairly bad harvest in terms of my education.
    2. How is a peanut like going to college?
    1. A peanut is like a student at college, there are so many of them that look and feel different on their outside shell, but when you open them up they all taste the same and in the same ways all students are there for an education.
    2. A peanut is like going to college because you have to carefully open up the harder, outer shell to experience the gains of eating it and in the same way at college you have to put hard work into your education, but in the end you gain tasty knowledge.
    3. A peanut is like going to college because there are so many different variations of them and in the same way there are so many different colleges that provide extremely different experiences.

Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning.

When I was a little girl, I used to swallow my gum. My mom tried to prevent me from doing it and told me not to do, but I never listened. I remember when I asked for a piece of gum she told me not to swallow it because if I did whatever is inside my throat would all glue together and I will not be able to chew gum anymore. As a kid I loved gum, I totally ignored what my mom told me and kept swallowing every gum that I chewed. However, once I was chewing my gum then decided to swallow it, I was unable to swallow my gum and I choked on it. When my mom helped me get it out, I then told her “mom u were right, I choked because I swallowed too many gums before.” After that day I never swallowed any gums and now I don’t chew gum.

Provide at least 3 answers to these questions:

    1. How is the peanut like me? A peanut is like me, it seems so hard in the outer shell, but when you get into the inside it is soft and sensitive. I seem for many people hard person to get along with, but when they get to know me they say I am a sensitive and soft person, just like the peanut. Peanut got curves, I got curvy body. Some peanuts got tan color, and some do not. I get tan when I go into the sun, and when I am not I am my normal color skin. 2. How is a peanut like going to college? A peanut is like going to college seems too hard to handle, but ones you crack the peanut it’s the inside that matters. College is the same way, seems so hard to do all that homework and exams, but the results would be very satisfying in the future.

  27. A good example of fallacy in reasoning is two wrongs, at work when people call in sick in a department we need to find coverage, well it was a rainy day and my supervisor wanted to send me to push carts outside, but we had seasonals which I argued to send a seasonal to push carts and they didn’t want to, so what I did to prove a point I went out there without a jacket and of course I was soak and I got a cold. Two wrongs don’t equal a right, I did prove a point but I got a cold.

  28. Peanut like me is salty outside but awesome in the inside once you get to know it. People assume that I’m stuck up but once you get to know me I’m not at all stuck up total opposite. A peanut is like going to college because it has patches all around it may look tough but once you work on and crack it open you will see that all the hard work paid off you get to the chewy center. Peanut is curvy like me because I’m all over the place like a peanut its curvy and bumpy it has character as well as me. That’s what makes the peanut a unique nut it has a curvy outside and a chewy inside and once you smash it turns into peanut butter and it’s quite delicious.

  29. an example of a fallacy is when i told my little brother if he doesnt get good grades at school the ghost is going to come out the closet and try to kill him for not paying attention in class and it actually worked everytim he would geta good grade he would show me and tell me to tell the ghost to go away.

for the 2nd qurstion, a peanute is like me bcause it has the same color as me. when you get into the inside it is soft and sensitive. I seem for many people hard person to get along with, but when they get to know me they say I am a sensitive and soft person. just like peanute butter is very sof but a real peanute is really hard if that made any sense they say im like peanute butter once they get to know me.

A peanut is like me because it is hard to crack. I am very hard to crack under pressure. I work well with having lots of stuff going on in my life and I enjoy being busy. I also think I have a rough or hard external appearance but once you get to know me I am a big softy.

A peanut is like college as sometimes the experiences are very predictable while other times its very up and down due to the difficulty of the classes and the number of classes you are taking at one time.

  31. Comment 1: A fallacy in reasoning I've experienced is when I was little and my mom told me that if I swallowed the black seeds that are in the watermelons then a watermelon would grow in my stomach. Obviously a watermelon can't grow in someones stomach but when I was little she definitely fooled me.

Comment 2: How is a peanut like me? Well 1, I hold up a strong wall and it makes it hard to trust people so I would say that I have an hard outer shell just like a peanut. 2, I have a strong personality. Deep down I stay firm to what I believe in just like a peanut inside it's shell. And 3, I am like a Tom boy sometimes and might seem a little rough around the edges like a shell to a peanut.
And how is a peanut like going to college? Well 1, when your new to going to college it can seem really hard to get use to. Like a peanut you have to chew at it and slowly get a grasp on college. 2, it's like we're the peanut inside the shell growing with knowledge to be ready for life one day. And 3, some students can crack under pressure of their work loads.
