Chapter 8, Interests and Values, Oct. 17-23

For this week, choose any two topics below.
Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.
Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.
Comment on another student's post.  Can you add to their comment or raise new questions.
Read the following 2 scenarios and comment on one of them.  Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.
Scenario 1: What should be my major?
Shawn is twenty years old and has completed two years of college. He has been trying to decide whether to major in engineering or music. He has completed all of his general education requirements as well as several courses in music, math, and physics. As a child, Shawn was interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions. He always took things apart to see how they worked. Math was always easy for Shawn, and he received awards for achievement in science.  He also took part in band throughout his school years and learned to play several instruments. As a teenager, he had a garage band and became so interested in playing the piano that he spent two hours a day practicing. Shawn’s dilemma was that he was becoming stressed out trying to do both majors and
no longer had time to do well in both music and engineering. He also wanted to have time to get a part-time job in order to become more independent. Shawn’s top five values are being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax.  Based on his values, what major should Shawn choose?
Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?
Maria is a married mother of two young boys ages five and seven and a part-time college student. Maria and her husband, Juan, are very proud of their Mexican heritage and value their marriage and family. They both think that it is important for Maria to spend time with the children. Maria learned to speak English as a second language and has made sure that her children speak both English and Spanish. While the children are in school, Maria has been attending college part-time with the goal of becoming a teacher’s aide in a class for bilingual children. She has some experience as a teacher’s aide and gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the children. Juan works in construction, and the family has sacrificed to come up with the money to pay for Maria to attend college. Maria has struggled to earn her associate’s degree and is proud of her accomplishments. She values her education and wants her children to do well in school. Now Maria is considering continuing her education to earn the bachelor’s degree so that she can become a teacher. She would enjoy having her own classroom, loves working with children, and would have a higher income as a teacher than she would as a teacher’s aide. Maria’s husband is concerned that she will spend too much time at college and will not be home for the children. He is also relieved that Maria has finished college and plans to work part-time to supplement the family income while the children are in school.  Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?

  1. Response to scenario #2:
I think Maria should continue with her education and get her Bachelor’s degree. If it is something she wants to do her husband Juan should back her up. She will not go to school forever, but the reward after graduating will be forever. She will have a better job and will fulfill her dream. She will show her children that studying is important and one should never give up on their dream. Arrangements will have to be made for her children to be taken care of, but it is much easier now because of all the online classes that are available. Maria can schedule her classes around the children’s school hours. If there is a time that Maria needs to take an evening class, then again it won’t be forever; Juan can stay with the children or pick them up from a sitter and spend some quality time with them as well. Maria and Juan only need to set time aside to spend with the children together and time for themselves as well. It will be hard for a while, but the outcome of their struggles will be rewarding.

  2. I have many different values and morals and I usually act in a simular way to what I value. such as a time where I was on the sidewalk down a street in new york one day and i saw a homeless man passed out on the sidewalk. I had remembered the news story of a homeless man who had passed out and no one had helped him for 19 minutes until an ambulance was called to get him, and by then it was too late. But in this instance i was not going to stand back and watch as dozens of people just walked past this man. I called 911 and reported that he was passed out and I was not sure why. It turned out he had taken pills that he had stolen from someone and was trying to kill himself. It was a very emotional day for me and my family and I believe that this story shows that my value of life is very high. It doesnt matter if he was homeless or not. a person is a person no matter what they look like or act like.

  3. Like i said in the previous posting.. I have many values and morals. Although there are times where I struggle and I need that extra reminder of how I should and shouldn't act based off of my hormones and feelings about certain situations. I have for years been a part of a group here in san diego that is about giving back to the community and keeping san diego clean and trying to encourage a healthy environment. As small as it may seem.. I have always felt guilty for littering. I have only done it a few times in my life and every time I feel very guilty after. I have tried to make sure my friends and I do not do it but here and there I know that I have messed up and dropped trash or unwanted things on the floor or ground outside. I believe in being honest and trustworthy and fair and so much more and I do not think that littering shows any of those atributes.

  4. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values:
One of the successful decisions I made was changing jobs years ago. I was working as a receptionist and really had no interaction with customers except by phone, helping little with decision making. A family friend mentioned that the company he was working at was looking for an Office Manager. I was reluctant to apply, but was encouraged to go. Since I did not have anything to lose I went. On the first interview the owner and General Manager told me what my duties would be; it was overwhelming and I had negative thoughts about not being able to handle the job. After the second interview I was offered the position, which took me a day to decide to take. I have since been at the job for 10 years. It matches my values because I help people out with problems, not only the customers but the employees as well. I defend the employees when a supervisor is blaming them for something they did not do. Employees respect me because they know I am honest and look out for their best interest. I am a loyal employee, I have stuck by them even though my work week was lowered from 5 days to 3, and do not go behind the owners back looking for another job. I informed them I was returning to school, because I wanted to prepare myself in case business worsened. I think in doing what is right for everyone, not only for the benefit of the company.

  5. For my first blog entry I would like to comment on topic #1. A successful descion I have made was to attempt to go back to school and contiune my education after missing a semester of college and falling behind. I intially thought that my peers would think down on me because I was a semeseter behind them and honestly, I was also jealous that they would have the oppruntunity to transfer before I did. Also I was concered about how to pay for my tuition since that was why I did not go that next spring semester. After recieving the news that I qualified for finacial aid I felt more confident in my ability to finsh college and recieve my degree in what I personally fund out my majorwould be in sociology. So far, I have been more successful in college and I am putting more effor in this semester and having postive results because of it.

  6. For my second blog entry I would like to comment on scenario #2. I think Maria should contiune her education, despite her hubands concerns. Maria is going to college to better their lifestyle for the children, not taking away from them. Maria is thinking about the long term affects of her going to college. This includes a better lifestyle for her and her family and motivate her children to go to college and know they can succeed as well. As far as her husbands concerns, Maria can still work at least part time and go to school in the late afternoon or when the children are in school also. That way since college schedules are desinged to be flexible, she can make a schedule that revolves around her childrens school schedule and also, maybe Maria's husband can take care of household chores while Maria is in school.

  7. The following is a comment towards scenario 1:

Shawn seems to have a problem when choosing his major. He is interested in both music and Engineering. I think its great that Shawn still has his options open even after two years in college. Shawn should go ahead and choose to major in Science and Math and become an Engineer, but he shouldn't stop their. Since Shawn wants a part time job to become more independent he should try and find a job that involves music. Like teaching people how to play the guitar, or piano. That way Shawn can have fun teaching people about music as well as study to become an Engineer. This fits into Shawn's 5 values by achieving something which is becoming an Engineer, and with that he is most likely going to have a secure future as well as doing an interesting job. Lastly he will have the time to relax by playing his music or teaching people on how to play the piano.

  8. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values: A successful decision that I have made that matched my values is, when I decided to continue college after I did not pass one of my classes first semester. I felt like a failure because I did not pass my first math class in college; I really wanted to give up on school at that point. I did not understand how I did not pass; I had only done badly on one exam, so I was confused. Failing the class made me really discouraged, and I kept thinking that if I failed this class, then I am likely to fail more classes. I was pretty set on just giving up on school because I felt this was a sign that college is not something for me. I really thought about it and I eventually decided to try one more semester out and see how it goes. I told myself that if I fail another class in my second semester I will quit school and if I pass everything I will continue with school. My second semester was my best semester overall because I got all As in my classes, even in the class I failed the previous semester. I tried harder second semester and actually studied; I was very proud of myself at this point. I continued school after that because I had more confidence in myself, and I am still currently in school. My decision to stay in school and not just give up is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

  9. Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values: A very unsuccessful decision that I made happened in high school, it was when me and my friends decided to ditch school. We snuck out of the back of the school and went across the street to eat at Jack in the Box. After we finished eating we went to go hang out at the park by the school. While relaxing at the park we over heard a younger couple arguing with each other. As the yelling got louder we became concerned, the man then slapped the woman and she started crying. She walked over to sit on the bench by the tree we were sitting under. She sat there sobbing and her boyfriend drove off in the car. My friend asked her if she was okay and she said she was okay just shaken up. Her boyfriend returned back to the park and came out of the car yelling and started hitting the woman again. My friend went behind the tree and called the police and told them what was going on. The man pulled his girlfriend into his car and they drove off, it was really unsettling knowing that he left with her. Once the police finally got to the park, the couple was long gone. The police officer did not believe our story and he quickly changed the subject and asked us why were we not in school. We really had no excuse; the police officer drove us back to school, talked to the school and our parents. We all really got in a lot of trouble. It was a bad decision to ditch school; ditching school is something that does not match my values.

  10. Scenario #1

I have made the decision to get back into school and finish my college degree. It is always very hard to get into school after you stop going but I finally came to my senses and remembered my values to try to be the best I can be. In order to get a better job I must first complete my degree. I now have a 1 year old daughter and wanted to get into school before it got later. I had always been taught that education is very important to ones life and may even determine one’s future. Plans don’t always work out as they should and the economy is not getting better so back to school it is. I am glad that I have values and that an education is part of it!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Scenario # 2

I definitely think that Maria should continue her education. Just as she was able to receive her associate’s degree she can get her bachelors degree in no time. Her husband should see that by her becoming a teacher she could supplement their income even more. Juan also needs to see that she should finish school now rather than latter on in life when her children are teenagers and really need their parents. He needs to help out after work if Maria needs help since she will have more homework and need more time to study. Her husband needs to see that in order to achieve something their needs to be sacrifices. Maybe they should both look over their values and address that possibly their individual values have changed. Changing values is not always a bad thing.

A successful decision that I made was going back to school for my second semester of college after I missed the first semester. I could have just given up on continuing my education because I had a job at the time. I made sure that I registered on time and I filled out all the papers I needed to get financial aid. Last semester the school messed up my financial aid and there was no way that I could start school so I had to wait a semester. During the time I had off I had a job that only lasted for the summer and they offered me a job there but I decided to continue school instead. Getting a better education is one of my values and being independent so staying in school really help reinforced my values for myself.

  15. Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

An unsuccessful decision that I made was quitting a job that I had because my boss treated me bad. This did not match my values because I wanted to be economically independent and quitting my job was not a good decision. Even though my boss was treating me bad I could have still stuck with the job and not given up. I know that I could have just stayed because I also valued working to achieve my goals and thought this job was helping me do that. Even though I did quit I really do value hard work and I should have stuck with my values and stayed but I know that it was all a learning experience for me. I also quit without saying that I was leaving because I listened to some people who were not really my friends. They also talked me into leaving and filled my head with a lot of bad things. I should not have listened or believed them and I should have just did my best and tried harder at my job.

  16. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.

A successful decision I have made that matched my values was when I was in high school and most of my friends decided they wanted to sneak out to go see this band at a bar. They all wanted me to go and wanted me to get a fake id with them right after school. I had thought about it and I didn't feel right about lying to my mom and to sneak out of my house. That night my friends snuck into the gate that stood around the back yard and came up to the back sliding glass door where my room was and knocked. I opened the door and told them I decided I didn't want to go because I didn't want to lie and I didn't want to disobey my mom. I told them they shouldn't go either and we should just have a girls night and watch movies and eat popcorn. Even though we all wanted to go they ended up staying the night and I stuck to my guns that I didn't want to go. I felt good for sticking to my values and lying to a bunch of people and one being my mom was not how I was raised.

An unsuccessful decision I have made that didn't match my values was when I needed to write a paper for my english class and I ended up waiting because I had a family party to go to. I told myself I would do it later that night but I ended up forgetting about it. Right before I left for class the next day I realized I hadn't written my paper. I went to class without it and I told my teacher the truth that I had procrastinated and he said he would give me one more night and I needed to turn it in first thing in class the following day. I did it that night and I would have gotten an A but he took 10 points off because the paper was late. I should have written the paper before the party and that way I would have gotten an A.

  18. This scenario of Maria is very common in everyday of the life and more in the Latino community where the woman usually has to stay at home to do chores and caring for children. Personally, I think she should finish her career because in the future her children will go home and she can have a career and do something that she like. On the other hand she can plan her schedule of the college at the same time that her children are in school and in this way she dont lose any time to be with them. Finally, talk to the husband to suggest that it is better when in a house are two income because this creates more security and stability in the family.

A decision I made recently and not according to my values was having changed jobs. I can say that about 5 months ago I change jobs because I was worried by the situation of the budget and my work in Head Start, so I started looking for another job where I would provide financial security. After several interviews and got my current job of 40 hours a week and benefits, but where I do not feel full and do not feel my passion as a teacher. Now at this point every morning I dont want to wake up because I dont want to go to my job. So at this moment of my life I still in doubts in what i need to do in my laboral life. =(

    Coment on scenario #1

First of all I would like to share that I identify with Shawn. He presents aptitudes for two major that somehow don’t go together. He tried to pursue both and the results were stress and probably not achieving full potential in any of them. If one of Shawn’s values weren’t having a secure future I would probably suggest that he finished the Music major. That way he will nutured his need of being independed, doing an interesting work and relaxing. But because he value a secure future, a career as a engineer would probably be ideal. That does not mean he should give up on music. He could become an Enginner and have a job that gives him security and on his free time persue his passion and talent for music.

  21. Comment on an successful decision you made and how it match your values:

An successful decision that I made was quitting a job that I had. The job gave me economical independency but was stressfull and wasn’t something related to what I really wanted to do in the future. At the time I was doing some frellance jobs as a photographer (wich I loved) while I worked at a restaurant (didn’t like it). At the restaurant I couldn’t express my creativity and even though I was economicallt secure I felt like I was waisting a time that I could be using torwards my real goals for the future. So, I was scared but I quit my job and decide to spent my time investing in my passion for photography. I was happier, inspired, I opened my photography business and I felt very happy and satisfied.

  22. Scenario 1:
Evidently Shawn is having some difficulty when it comes to choosing a major. As of now he has narrowed it down to two: engineering and music. Taking into account his values (having a secure future, doing interesting work and achieving something important) Shawn should major in engineering. Growing up he was always interested in science and taking things apart to see how they worked. Pursuing a career in music can oftentimes be unpredictable. The uncertain nature of the work results in unpredictable earnings, irregular hours and more often that not musicians must hold other jobs in order to sustain a living. Just because he’s majoring in engineering does not mean he has to give up his passion for music. Quite the opposite in fact, Shawn can get a part-time job that is music related. For instance Shawn can get a job at a music shop or entertain at a piano bar (seeing as how he has been interested in playing the piano and he’s had plenty of practice).

  23. Question 1:
Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values. During my first semester here at Cuyamaca I struggle with one particular class and I ended up failing. Rather than quit school altogether or think of myself as a failure I stayed committed and with some perseverance I went on to be successful in upcoming classes. When I look back on this time I consider it a wake-up call. In future classes I made an effort to ask the necessary questions if I did not understand something and to find ways to ease my anxiety when it comes to test taking.

About five years ago I receive bonus on my last check of the year based on how much above goal I was. I reach 125% to goal, so I received a 17% bonus on my final check for the year. When I received my paycheck I noticed my bonus was over $500 more than my bonus should have been. I immediate call the manager of the payroll department and asked them to review my bonus to make sure it was correct. She review and recalculated my bonus. She called me to confirm my bonus was over about $500 and asked me if I wanted to keep the additional my money they would reduce my next check by that amount or I would write them a check for the overage. I wrote them a check for the overage. I applied my honesty value to this situation by coming forward regarding the overpayment of my bonus.

I am going to comment on Scenario one. Shawn should major in engineering based on his values and goals. He could still enjoy a career in the music industry by work as an engineer. Their are several areas he would work within the music industry. He could work as a lighting engineer, recording/audio engineer, video engineer or he could wotk in architectural engineering. While Shawn is still in college he would find a part time job at a music store as a clerk or maybe find a job teach piano or other musical instruments to young kids as a few days a week.

  26. Scenario 1: Shawn is very stress trying to achieve a successful future choosing one or the other major but also working to support himself, he has to choose between music and engineering he should think about which one he likes best. Having a major that you like shouldn’t stress you out Shawn should pick one that covers his top five values. Engineering is a good major pay really good, Shawn is good at math and in science and always dream in being able to make new invention Shawn should be better off choosing to be an engineer. Music a good career to but it’s not a solid career because you have to be good and it’s not easy getting a record deal, Shawn can take his stress and play piano when he has free time.

  27. A successful decision I made was taking this class counseling 124 it matches my values because I want to succeed in school and life. The College Scope chapters have helped me by guiding me to understand myself and I’m learning every section of every chapter. This class has been the best decision have made because my friend told me take this class and I’m thankful for her to push me to go to Cuyamaca College and take this class. I wish I knew to take this class before but it’s never too late for anything, continuing college is in the process and a successful decision.

  28. In response to the first scenario:
A choice that I made that was successful and matched my values was to stick up for my best friends when our others friends were being disloyal to her. Friendship and loyalty are two of my most important values, and I always feel good about myself when I stand up for them. A specific occasion was when a couple of my friends were talking poorly of her behind her back, but being nice to her in person. After listening to it and debating on what to do for a couple of minutes I told the girls that if they were having problems with her they should address her about it. In the end I felt good because I stuck to my values, and they were able to work things out by actually talking about what was upsetting them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In response to the second question:
I would say the time I least stood up for my values and standards I believe to be important would be in one of my old relationships. I was with a guy who lied a lot and had problems remaining loyal, for some reason I repeatedly forgave him for disregarding my values. However, in the end I was the one who felt bad for not standing up for what was important to me, and once I realized how important these values were to me I was able to make better choices for myself, that were more compatible with my values.

  30. I want to share a successful decision I took and how that decision matched my values. In 1991, I was working full time with my BA degree in psychology in central California. I felt I was making good money and I was comfortable. However, I decided to follow my own advice; I took the next step in my educational career and applied for a graduate program. A few years later, I had completed my MA in Counseling Education and I was working full time here in San Diego. I value education; I had promoted education throughout my life to friends, family and in my role as a college recruiter. Therefore, I just felt I had to take the next step in my educational journey and I am glad I did.

  31. I would respond to scenario #1. Based on Shawn’s values, “being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax,” I think he should major in engineering instead of music. Since he loves music and playing the piano, he should make it as a hobby, and make engineering his interesting work that he is looking for. In my opinion to become an independent person and having a secure life a great job needs to be in place to be able to achieve these values. Musicians have good future as well; however, I think it will take Shawn years to make a great living.

  32. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.
A successful decision that I have made was majoring in civil engineer. This decision matched my values because my life time values are: having a great independent future, making a difference in life, having a relaxed life, having a comfortable happy family home. Making my decision, which is a successful decision, will make me have a life that I have always wanted and dreamed of ever since I was a kid. I remind myself with my values to be able to move on with my education and achieve my goal step by step.

Scenario 1: What should Shawn’s major be?
This seems to be a very easy decision to make. However, examining this scenario closely, it can be inferred that Shawn has a great interest in the sciences, specifically engineering. Thus, assuming that Shawn favors interests in this order investigative; conventional, and artistic, I would recommend Shawn major in engineering despite his appeal for music. This is because of Shawn’s top five values which include being independent, having a secure future, and achieving something important. Creating music is important in and of itself however making an invention would probably affect more people raising the achievement aspect.

I found an interesting post by another student I would like to comment on without revealing the identity. The commentator posted a story about how it impacted the individual, and how that is why it is representative of personal values: such relating to life. From other previously studied chapters similar scenes trigger the memory; such as it did for the commentator who had seen a similar situation on T.V of a helpless man on the street, however the individual chose a different action. This action supported the value of life in general. Even so, I would like to ask, then what happens when we as a country chose to wage war against others whose sole purpose is to eliminate our existence?

  35. In response to scenario#2, I believe that Maria should continue to get her BA and teaching credential. Maria can show her husband how much money she will make if she completed her degree and was able to get a full time teaching job. Maria can develop a plan to get a combination of financial aid and scholarships; she can also show her husband a schedule of how she can continue to be there for him and the children. Her husband may be willing to support her a few more years is he believes is for the benefit of the entire family

Scenario 1: What should be my major?
Okay, so, for Shawn's dilemma for picking his major he should obviously just choose one, but he is divided fifty fifty between them. Looking at his important values it really doesn't help me decide for him any better. Assuming he finds both interesting and important we can disregard those two values. Next, being independent and living on his own sounds like something anyone can do with either of those careers. Engineering will definitely allow him to have an extremely secure future as it is one of the most in-demand and most-paid for job. So, if he chose Engineering he would have 0 worries when it comes to that. Yet, it is extremely stressful. Engineering requires a lot of work dedication, perfection, and attendance to details. If you get numbers wrong someone could loose their life. Now if he went through the music path for his major it would most likely be a fairly relaxing job. As most people listen to music to relax, and I bet it is something he enjoys to do. Yet, it may not give him a secure future. A lot of people makes bands and the sort and find out they don't become very successful. He could get a secure future through it, but it wouldn't be as certain as if he went with Engineering. If he is willing to give up a completely relaxed life for a secure and independent future he should go with Engineering, but if being able to relax is extremely important he should become a musician. (I assume this is your son who become an electrical engineer?)

Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

Unless this couple has a lot of savings stored away for her to college the ultimate answer is going to be no. The first two years of college at a community college are extremely cheap, much less than the time it takes to get a bachelors degree at a university. They'd have to spend probably around 20-30 thousand dollars compared to the maybe 5 thousand it took for her associates degree. She should just settle with her job as an aide for now. The reason being is they don't have the money for it. Yes, she would earn more money in the long term if she did go through with it, but she has children to raise and they don't have the money for her to do this. They'll definitely have to go into debt to support her education and in return that will effect her children's lifestyles from all the financial cutbacks they'll have to go through. Maria should definitely consider doing this when her children are in their older teens and don't need her care or income to support them.

  38. What's funny is that my two biggest values in life are my family and my friends, and they often conflict with each other. When I make plans with my family, I am forgoing an opportunity to do something fun and interesting with my friends. Likewise, if I make plans with my friends, my family's feelings may get hurt because they will feel that I don't value them as much as I do my friends. The truth it, I value both equally and I try to do my best to balance the two. A few weeks ago, I had told my dad that I would spend the afternoon with him by helping him make dinner and to watch the football game with him. Soon after we made these plans, I got a call from my friend asking if I wanted to go to a party. I told my friend that I had already made plans with my dad, and as bummed as my friend was, he understood and found somebody else to g o to the party with. This decision correlated with my family values, because I knew that my dad and I were going to have a fun afternoon together and I hadn't hurt his feelings by going to a party instead.

  39. A recent decision that I made that went against my values is a few weeks ago I stopped talking to one of my good friends because of a rumor that I heard. Like I've said, my friends are one of my top values in life. Some of my other values include being an understanding person, being a friendly person, and keeping peace with everybody in my life. It totally went against these values of mine to over react and break off contact with this friend of mine. I still haven't talked to her, and this prolonged period of no contact is only making things worse and going against my personal values even more. I plan to call her soon and make peace, so that I get my friend back and act in relation to my values in life.

  40. a succesfull decision ive made was when i was struggling with school and basketball. i then talked to my teacher and took his advice, i decided to make a plan and split time with school and basketball. i of course chose school first and decided to work on school work work for the first 2 hours after school then get my jumpers up. that really helped me out and i ended up passing all my classes and still kept my starting spot.

a unsuccesfull decision i have made was when all my friends did not have a 7th period class in high school but i did. i always decided to ditch 7th periode and worry about the work after school and went to go out and eat with them. i was always to lazy to do the work after school because i only wanted to go home or rest i ended up failing the art class and had to retake it in summer school i shouldnt have ditched class to be with my friends.

Response to scenario #1: since shawn is good with both music and engineering he should choose engeneering because he has more oppurtunities to make more money with that;however, that is a little more challenging because there is more math and science involved. it will be hard for a while but the outcome will be a great reward.

Response to scenario #2: i think maria should continue and get her education and juan should back her up with her decision, it will be hard for a little while but the outcome of it will be great and that gives the parents a reason why getting your education is important . arrangments can be made because there are a lot of online classes available these days and they can set up times of who will pick up the children from school i dont think it would be a big problem with maria going to school.

  41. I would say the biggest decision I have ever made was becoming a mother at a young age. I was given the life of a child and as a young teenage girl still in high school, a lot of girls my age would say that they have the decision of getting an abortion or following through with being a young mother. I took on the role of being a young mother because it followed my values of how I think abortion isn't the Godly thing to do. I decided that I was going to give my all to this little man because family means more to me then anything. Now, after making this important decision I wouldn't want my life any other way. I have a beautiful son! An amazing boyfriend who is the father of our son! And an incredible family! All this was given to me because I followed my values and took action.

  42. For scenario one: I would say that Shawn should major in engineering because based on his values of wanting independence and to be financially secure I think a more logic approach to life could give him that. Also he would like to do something important and do interesting work and I think if he was an engineer then he would be able to get his mind going and working on something that he feels is important to him. Also after getting work done he would be able to relax, or he would be doing something he is good at so he would be able to relax while doing it. He would also be living the dream from when he was little and that's amazing these days to be able to do that.
